She was born December 27, 1907, in Boardman Township, rural Elkader, to Ole G. and Ella (Sorum) Olson. Gladys received her education at the Cain Country School. She was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, and later joined Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, when she was married. Read More	Gladys Viola Baumgartner, 99, of Elkader, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born December 27, 1907, in Boardman Township, rural Elkader, to Ole G. and Ella (Sorum) Olson. Gladys received her education at the Cain Country School. She was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, and later joined Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, when she was married. She was united in marriage to Elmer Richard Baumgartner on December 14, 1927, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, by Rev. Frunke. Seven children were born to this union. They lived on a farm near West Union for the first seven years of their marriage; then moved to a farm near Elkader where they lived until Elmer retired in 1958. They loved fishing trips to Minnesota and trips to California. Elmer died August 28, 1966, and she moved into an apartment above the Coast to Coast store in Elkader, where she lived for twenty seven years. She moved to the Keystone Terrace Apartments for a time until she entered the Elkader Care Center on June 27, 2001. Gladys was a homemaker and also helped on the farm. Gladys enjoyed raising her children and having the grandkids visit. She enjoyed gardening and doing her chicken chores. Gladys loved spending time with her family, quilting, cooking, canning and embroidering. Many of her quilts have been completed by her granddaughter. Survivors include her six children, Earl (Inge) Baumgartner, Elkader, Wayne (Joyce) Baumgartner, St. Olaf, Lloyd (Ruth) Baumgartner, Iowa City, Betty Marmann, Elkader, Mary Ann (Dick) Heiden, Elkader, Louise (Larry) Grimm Kasson, MN; eighteen grandchildren; twenty nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and her sisters Lenora Possehl, Elkader and Esther Skibbe, Spring Valley, CA. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Dorothy Marie, in infancy, two brothers, Curtis and Millard Olson; sister, Evelyn Possehl; son-in-law, Everett Marmann and three grandchildren, David Marmann, Phillip Grimm, and Debbie Baumgartner.
