Read More	Montrose Daily Press - Montrose, CO Monday - 15 August 1921 Page 1 - Column 1&2 Lightning Kills Glen Hubbard on California Mesa About 7:00 o'clock Saturday evening Glenn Hubbard of Upper California mesa, about 6 miles west of Olathe, was almost instantly killed by a flash of lightning while the horse he was riding escaped injury. The young man had just corraled the cows and was riding across the yard when there came a very vivid flash of lightning. It was one of thos unusual flashes which seemed to run parallel with the earth and consisted of a band of fire a few feet above the ground. While no one saw the accident, te horse was noticed running down the road and groans of teh stricken man were heard and therby sttracted assistance. Physicians were summoned, but death resulted before they arrived. A peculiar incident noted as a result of teh lightning's antics, it that the electric spark seemed to go thru the body from side to side, entering at the left side, or near the heart, where it left a discoloration and came out on the right side, leaving two discolorations a few inches apart. The spark doubtless became deflected in the body and split, leaving at two places. It is stated that usually the current goes thru teh body from head to feet. The peculiar phase of this particular flash of lightning which seemed to be a band parallel with the earth, probably accounts for the unusual manifestation in the body. The unfortunate man was 24 years of age. He was born near Olathe and had always lived in that locality. He is survived by his wife who was Hazel Young, and to whom he was married about three years ago, and by a little son, Jack, of two years. His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Hubabrd, survive, and lived on teh farm adjoining him' two sisters, Mrs. Wlater Brady and Mrs. Edna Lackey, who is seriously ill at St. Lukes hospital, and five brothers, Bert, of Gateway, and Lute, Erick, Charles and Dell, at home. A brother, Dean, died in service during the war, and another brother, James, was killed about five years ago, when he was thrown from a broncho and sustained a broken neck. On account of the sudden death of this third son, the mother is prostrated and overcome with grief. The body was brought to the White Mortuary Saturday night. Coroner Schermerhorn deemed an inquest unnecessary. Arrangements for the funeral depend upon the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Young of North Sixth street, parents of Mrs. Hubbard, who are en route from Texas. If they arrive Wednesday the funeral will be held Thursday. The deceased had lived all his life in Montrose county and was a highly respected citizen and his many firends will join with the surviving relatives in extending eympathy in this sad hour. The same flash of lightning struck a hay stack near by and cut a pole in two and severed some wires attached to it. A most violent rain and electric storm ensued. M. Standish called on Mrs. Lyman Hubabrd Monday. The funeral of Glen Hubbard will be held Sunday afternoon at the Stone school house. Interment will be in the Olathe cemetery. Mrs. Young, Mrs. Hubbard’s mother, is on her way from Texas to attend her son-in-law’s funeral, and will not reach here until Friday or Saturday.
