He had been active in civic and lodge work in the community and state. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Trinity Lutheran Church here. He had been assistant welfare director since 1932. He suffered a heart attack about a year ago. He was born Feb. 7, 1912, at rural Durbin, a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Jahnke. He attended Goshen Grade School and Casselton High School. He received his A.B. from Jamestown College in 1934 and was a graduate student at the University of Chicago in 1939. From 1934 to 1937 he was assistant cashier at the Casselton State Bank. He was a case worker on the McHenry County Welfare Board in Towner from 1937 to 1938, and was a child welfare worker at Fort Totten from 1939 to 1941. He served as north central district representative of the Public Welfare Board at Rugby from 1941-42. In World War II he was a first lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps, serving in the European Theater. He became assistant director of the board’s Division of Public Assistance in 1946 and in in 1948 was named administrative assistant of the division. He assumed his post of assistant director in 1952. He was a member of the Governor’s Civil Defense Commission; the North Dakota Conference of Social Welfare, serving as its president in 1955; the American Public Welfare Association, of which he was regional membership chairman in 1954 to 1955; the American Legion, the United Commercial Travelers, the Masons, the Elks, the Bismarck Lions and Trinity Lutheran Church. He married Evelyn Nesvig, June 20, 1939 at Goshen Moravian Church in Durbin. He leaves his wife, two sons, Larry 14, and Brian, 10, both at home; his mother, Mrs. George Jahnke, Casselton and three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Grace) Askew and Mrs. William (Lily) Kenney, both of Moorhead, Minn., and Mrs. Howard (Georgine) Nelson, Casselton. He was preceded in death by his father. The body will lie in state at the Boelter Funeral Home from Saturday afternoon until 1 p.m. Monday. There will be reviewal at the funeral home only. Burial will be made in Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was known for his work in the Elks Lodge throughout the state and especially with the crippled children’s program at Camp Grassick near Dawson. He was a past exalted ruler of the Bismarck Elks Lodge. A former president of the Will-Moore Parent-Teacher Association here, he served as president of the North Dakota Congress of Parents and Teachers in 1956. The unexpected death shocked his co-workers and friends. Henry Flohr; past Western District deputy of the North Dakota Elks Association lauded Jahnke,”He always got along well with everybody,” Flohr said. “He was a nice fellow to have around. He was always a willing worker; when there was something to be done he would come forward without waiting to be asked.” Declared Carlyle D. Onsrud, director of the Welfare Department: “He was one of the principal reasons the public welfare program in North Dakota has become recognized nationally over the past 10 years. He was a natural as a personnel director, because he had a kind of genius for making friends and keeping them. I have never seen anyone in public office with that much organizational ability. He was one of the best examples of a public welfare administrator you could have. He had a lot of drive and zest.” Published in the Bismarck Tribune, Bismarck, North Dakota, July 1962
