Glenn was born March 29, 1922 to John C. and Maria (Miller) Gering in Turner County, South Dakota, and lived in the Freeman, SD area most of his life, moving to Minnesota in March 2014 to be close to family. Gering departed this earth to be with his Lord and Savior on June 4, 2016 at Arbor Lakes Senior Living, Maple Grove, MN at the age of 94. Glenn was born March 29, 1922 to John C. and Maria (Miller) Gering in Turner County, South Dakota, and lived in the Freeman, SD area most of his life, moving to Minnesota in March 2014 to be close to family. Glenn attended the Sunny South Country School, and graduated from Freeman Academy in 1940. He was married to Vivian (Brockmueller) on November 20, 1951, a union of 64 years. They were blessed with two children, John and Peggy. Glenn served his country in World War II as a conscientious objector, in alternative service for six months in Soil Conservation in Downey, Idaho; then three years working in a mental hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. While in Pennsylvania, he became qualified and served as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Furthering the cause of peace was dear to his heart throughout his life. Glenn was baptized and an active member of the Salem Mennonite Church in Freeman, SD. His service to the Lord included Sunday School Teacher/Superintendent, Church Moderator, Board of Deacons; as well as involvement with the Gideons International. He was an avid supporter of the Freeman community, holding leadership roles with the Freeman Heritage Museum, Freeman Historical Society, Freeman Chamber of Commerce and the Freeman Development Corporation. Glenn's deeply rooted faith and strong sense of integrity permeated all aspects of his life. Printer's ink coursed through his veins. As a youth on the farm, he helped in his father's mail-order print shop, Pine Hill Printery. In 1960, Glenn and his brother Vernon purchased the Freeman Courier weekly newspaper and moved Pine Hill Printery to town. Glenn continued managing the Freeman Courier for 24 years, and in 1984 transitioned the Courier to Tim Waltner. Glenn owned and operated Pine Hill Printery from 1952 until 1990. Glenn held great satisfaction in providing jobs for families in the community and in producing quality printed materials. He truly valued the people who worked for Pine Hill Printery and the Freeman Courier, and recognized that they were essential to its success. Music brought joy to Glenn his entire life, and he brought joy to others through music. The Saxatones musical group played old-time harmony music in retirement homes, Turner County Fair, and other venues throughout southeastern SD from 1948 to 2006. Upon moving to Arbor Lakes Senior Living, MN, Glenn was appreciated for his musical contributions to the facility in his twilight years, along with his good-natured wit. His legacy continues – he has passed his love of music and his vintage saxophone collection to his grandsons. Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his wife Vivian, son John of Sioux Falls, daughter Peggy, son-in-law Jasper, and grandsons Nathan and Joshua Li of Plymouth MN. He was preceded in death by his parents John C. and Marie Gering, sister Mabel Graber, brothers Harvey and Vernon Gering. Glenn's favorite Bible passages include "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength" Isaiah 40:31 and "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" Psalm 111:10.
