He attended Fremont Public Schools then worked as an electrician until entering the U.S. Army in 1952. He served in the Korean War until he was honorably discharged with honors in 1954. He married Beverley Tillman in 1954, and they later divorced. He married Roberta Shaw of California and they later divorced.
