Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Read More	Glenn Duane Johnson, age 87, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at a care center in Lake Norden, SD. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday prior to services at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion of Watertown and the Funeral Honors Team of the U.S. Navy. Honorary pallbearers will be: Norman Ebner, Dennis Rislove, Darwin Stadley, Bill Herman, Al Stoltenburg, Les Beitelspacher and all of the electrical lineman that he had the pleasure of working with over the years. Active pallbearers will be: Robert Walth, Thomas Horst, Douglas Hintz, Kyle G. Horst, Josef Walth and Michael Ebner. Glenn was born on September 4, 1927, at Columbus, ND, to Helmer and Mary (Sande) Johnson. At age six he moved with his parents and three siblings to Rushford, MN, where he grew up and attended school. At 17 he enlisted and served during WWII in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee. After completion of his military service he worked for numerous electrical contractors including the Rural Electrification Association building power lines, a trade he would continue for the rest of his career. In 1960, he founded Lake City Electric in Watertown serving as its president and co-owner. In 1970, he opened Johnson Construction (eventually Glenn D. Johnson Construction) which built and maintained power lines and substations in South Dakota and across the tri-state area until 1989. After Glenn retired, he stayed busy working part time driving truck for the Stadley Construction Company. Glenn married Lillian Marie Herrman in 1953 at LaCrosse, KS. They met when Glenn worked for the REA, bringing electric power for the first time to her family’s farm. After their marriage, they lived in several states while Glenn pursued his work as a lineman. In 1960, they settled permanently in Watertown where he based his construction companies and where they raised and educated their three daughters. Glenn was a member of the Joseph M. Johnson V.F.W. Post #5905 in Rushford, MN; the American Legion Post #17 in Watertown; the Benevolent Order of Elks and the South Dakota Electrical Council. He was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church where he often served as an usher. He was grateful to have participated in the Honor Flight Program, traveling with his fellow WWII veterans to tour Washington, D.C. He was an avid gardener. Glenn was a trained carpenter and enjoyed wood working, fishing and restoring antique tractors. He was also an accomplished musician, playing trombone as a young man with a jazz and dance band. In 2010, Glenn was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. For several years he was lovingly cared for at home by his grandson Kyle G. Horst, former Public Opinion reporter. Glenn died Wednesday, October 29, at the Golden Living Center, Lake Norden, SD, from complications of Alzheimer’s and pneumonia. He will be greatly missed. Glenn is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Glenda and Robert Walth of Brandon, SD; Wanda and Thomas Horst of Sachse, TX; Linda and Douglas Hintz of Canby, MN; grandchildren: Robyn (Swets nee Walth) Wallace and her husband Jared; Kristyne Walth; Josef Walth; Kyle G. Horst; Katelyn Horst, Kitty Horst; Sydney Hintz; Bailey Hintz; great-grandson Swets; brother-in-law, Norman Ebner; sister-in-law, Judy (Herrman) Basgall; nephew and former employee, Michael Ebner; plus numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, in 2008; one infant son, Lynn Johnson; his parents; older brother, Joseph, at Pearl Harbor; sisters, Marilynn Rislove and Lucille Ebner, brother-in-law, Joseph Rislove; brother-in-law, Melvin Basgall; grandson-in-law, Daniel Swets; and protégé, apprentice and long-time employee, journeyman, Terry Grace.
