He was born Dec. 19, 1935, in Garnett, the son of Paul and Daisy (Ashburn) Showalter. He grew up in the Colony area and was graduated from Colony High School. He then attended Coffeyville Community College for two years. He began his career with Sears, Roebuck and Company in furniture sales in Coffeyville. He then began working in store management, which would take him and his family to Joplin, Mo., Albuquerque, N.M., El Paso, Texas, Shreveport, La., and Amarillo and Austin, Texas, where he would retire in 1991 after 38 years. He spent his retirement traveling and spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan, especially to all University of Texas activities. He is survived by his wife, Delores; daughters, Janice McClelland and her husband, Phil, Caballo, N.M., and Elizabeth Smith and her husband, John, El Paso, Texas; a son, Mike and his wife, Anna, Round Rock, Texas; a son-in-law, Steve Nichols, Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren, Nikki, Derek, Kelli, Andrew, Philip Jr., Jennifer, Brittany, Stephany and Tyler; and three great-grandchildren. A sister, Darlene Kaal, a daughter, Angela Nichols, and grandson, Austin Nichols, died earlier. Memorials to Colony Baseball Program may be left at the funeral home.
