Gloria Alma (Brandt) Remhof, daughter of Carl H. and Elsie (Rieks) Brandt, was born at her parents' home near Hubbard, Iowa, in Hardin County. She was baptized on Aug. 9, 1924, and confirmed on April 10, 1938, at Zion Evangelical Church, Hubbard. Gloria was re-baptized in the Jordan River at the Sea of Galilee on Oct. 25, 1984. Gloria attended country school at Hardin County Grant No. 9 through 8th grade. She graduated from Alden High School in 1941 where she was a member of the girls' basketball and volleyball teams and the band. Gloria was united in marriage to Fred G. Remhof on June 24, 1946, in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Gloria retired from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company on Jan. 1, 1984, after more than 35 years of service. She began her career in the Iowa Falls office where she was an operator and held several clerical positions before becoming chief operator. She was promoted to District Traffic Staff Supervisor and moved to Mason City. She finished her career in the Waterloo office as a group manager. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Waterloo, Iowa, where she served as secretary of the Church Council, as a member of the Finance Committee, and was a long-time member and organizer of the Quiltmakers. Gloria was a member of the Waterloo chapter of Business and Professional Women, serving as president in 1988 and, in 1989, was named the chapter's Woman of the Year. She was a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America and served as president of the Waterloo chapter in 1990-91. She was also a contributing member of the Covenant Medical Center Auxiliary in Waterloo. Gloria was survived by a son and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, twin daughters Jane and Judy, and her brother Gene Brandt. Date of death is inscribed as Feb. 15 on her gravestone, listed as Feb. 14 in the Social Security death index, and listed as Feb. 9 in an obituary published by the Waterloo (Iowa) Courier on Feb. 12, 2013.
