Mr. Nansel had a long active and honorable career and will be greatly missed. Godfrey Nansel was born in Nauvoo, Illinois April 24, 1857 and passed away at Arnold, Nebraska July 23, 1934, being at the time of his death 77 years, 2 months and 29 days old. After spending his early boyhood in Illinois, he went to Marysville, Missouri to work. Here he met Sarah Elizabeth McCreary and following their marriage January 10, 1881, they set up their new home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1884 they moved to Nebraska and came to Sand Valley near Callaway. Thus for a half-century, with the exception of about five years in the late 80's and early 90's, Mr. Nansel has been a resident of Custer County and for the past 22 years he has lived in Arnold. Nearly seven years ago, October 20, 1927, his wife who had truly been his life companion, preceded him in death. In earlier life Brother Nansel was a member of the Baptist Church. He transferred his membership to the First Methodist Church of Arnold on March 13, 1913 and from that time he has remained a faithful churchman and a consistent Christian. There were twelve children in the Nansel home, one of whom, Lillie Blanch, passed away in infancy. The surviving are: Arthur Roy of Billings, Montana, Anna Gertrude Whaley of Callaway, Jesse Franklin of Arnold, Nora Josephine Moore of Callaway, Lewis Oliver of Arnold, Hubert Godfrey of Meyers, Montana, Joseph Earl of Meyers, Montana, Harry Wray of Lomita, California, Cecil Maud Smith of Arnold, Lloyd Kenneth or Arnold and Charles A. of Arnold. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Owens of Imogene, Iowa and Mrs. Ella Lively of Denver, Colorado, three brothers Michael, William and John of Monroe, Nebraska, 53 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Methodist Church where Mr. Nansel had long been a member and which he had helped to build. As a special request of his, no flowers were used. Rev. Clare L. Van Meter had charge of the services and a mixed quartette of Mrs. J. H. Melton, Mrs. F.A. Burnham P. G. Houghton and C. B. Pearce sang the following songs, all special favorites of Mr. Nansel; "Face to Face", Shall We Gather at the River" and "Have Thine Own Way." The pallbearers were six grandsons, Archie and Fay Nansel, Merle and Norris Whaley, Donald and Ira Moore. Following the service the body was taken to the cemetery west of Callaway where interment was made. A large crowd at the Arnold church and the cemetery at Sand Valley spoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Nansel was held.
