A funeral service for Goldie will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 403 E. South St., Manly, with Pastor Don Preston, officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery in Plymouth. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church. Goldie dedicated her entire life to education, mentoring, and tutoring children with great caring and compassion. It is Goldie's wish that any memorial be used to establish a scholarship fund to further their education with the hope that her love of education may continue to help children for many years to come. Goldie Katherine Michalek was born on Nov. 18, 1910, at home in rural Plymouth, the oldest of three children born to Anton and Lena (Hunchis) Michalek. Goldie started her education in rural country schools. After graduating from Plymouth High School in 1928, she attended Iowa State Teacher's College (now the University of Northern Iowa) and received a teaching certificate. She taught that fall in Union Township No. 5 in Worth County, then later at Union Township No.8, many times being the teacher and janitor, gathering firewood on the walk to school. In 1943, she started teaching primary grades in Plymouth and was instrumental in starting the kindergarten program there. Goldie furthered her own education by attending Iowa State Teacher's College, Morningside, Iowa State University, and a business school in Chicago. She earned a B.A. in 1953 and M.A. degree in 1964, from Drake University in Des Moines. Goldie did post-graduate work at the University of Iowa, UNI, and Drake. Goldie was unique about receiving her credits because she was never a full-time student for a year at a time on any one campus. She always attended summer, Saturday, or evening classes. In 1949, the superintendent of Mason City Schools personally requested her to join the teaching staff at McKinley Elementary School. She started her 27th year of teaching beginning in the first grade, and finished in the 1975-1976 school year as associate principal, as this was the last year for McKinley School. Goldie was also one of the first Head Start teachers. Goldie served as a resource person for career education programs and mentored many student teachers. A big accomplishment was her determination to get McKinley's playground from dirt and mud to blacktop. In her retirement, she continued to substitute teach at many area schools until she was 74. Presenting an old time school class program to second graders at Garner, she went down the slide at age 90. Goldie was named Iowa's Teacher of the year in 1973, and received a Delta Kappa Gamma Memorial Scholarship, a PTA national award, and is listed in Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America. Although Goldie remained single until she was 71, she married Arthur Holden in 1981. Both being lifelong farmers, they enjoyed life with each other until Arthur's death in 1993. Goldie belonged to many professional teacher organizations and was a life long member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Plymouth, serving on the church board and the membership and scholarship committees. She was on the Bohemian Cemetery Board for many years. Goldie, being a very active church circle member, she served many a funeral or wedding reception, or bazaar, always staying until the last dish was washed and put away. During these times, she cared for her ailing father and mother, and did many a farm chore. In her later years, she attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly. Left to cherish Goldie's life are Lorraine (Robert) Martin, of Manly, and their children, Theresa (Travis) Glidden, of Garner, Kristine (Marc) Whyle, of Muscatine, BJ (Vallie) Martin, of Klemme; Michael (Charlotte) Michalek, of Manly and their children Tyler Michalek, stationed in Germany, and Katie Michalek of Manly; Tony (Jan) Michalek of Minnetrista, Minn., and their children, Matt Michalek of Burnsville, Minn., Ryan (Lori) Michalek, of Polk City, Kristin (Zach) Kammemueller of Rochester, Minn., and Rachel Calliguri, of Minnetrista, Minn., Mary Overgaard (David Cook) of Portland, Ore., and their son, Nels (Val) Overgaard-Cook-Waducki of Chicago, Ill.; great-great nephews and nieces, Cody, Ty, Autumn, Tristin Glidden, Blazek and Aspen Whyle, Abigail Martin, and Aaron Michalek; stepchildren, Marilyn Manchester, Carolyn (Jim) Benjegerdes, Joann (Wes) Boyd, Eugene (Dianne) Holden and Lowell (Katy) Holden; stepgrandchildren, Wendy Kemberling, Bill Manchester, Lesley Thomas, Craig and Karl Benjegerdes, Alicia and Ryan Boyd, Jeannette Woessner, Stacy Stanskaski, Matt Holden, Anne Girton, and Molly Stakston; stepgreat-grandchildren, Merissa Kemberling, Talia Manchester, Allison, Charley and Olivia Thomas, Jessica Polous, San and Tim Benjegerdes, Sophia, Angela and Vivian Benjegerdes, Calvin and Joseph Woessner, Sam and Reed Stanslaski, Jack and Ava Girton, Holden and Andrew Stakston; stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Logan Benjegerdes and Brayden Polous; as well as many other extended family members and friends. Goldie was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Holden; her parents, Anton and Lena Michalek; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and JessieMaye Michalek, sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Gunnar Overgaard; great-nephew Todd Michalek; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Frank Manchester; and step granddaughters, Valerie Benjegerdes and Jill Holden. Goldie lived her life with great dignity following her strong faith in God. Thank you God, for giving us Goldie.
