Dorr-Colbert Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were Dennis Gochenour, Harry Spangler, Lyle Thomassen, Steve Heneger, Gary Petersen and Jerry Twonmey. Mapel was born August 23, 1897, in Pottawattamie County, near Avoca, the daughter of William Melvin and Effie Dale (Wollen) Mapel. She was Baptized in the Christian church at Avoca. She complete her elementary education at Cascade school and graduated from Avoca High School. She married Michael Paul Ward on January 3, 1917. To this union were born one daughter and three sons, Thelma, Jack, Jean and Theodore. Michael preceded her in death on March 21, 1954. She moved to Lincoln, where she was employed at the University of Nebraska Student Union and at various soroity houses on campus. She married Samuel J. Baker on December 20, 1964, in Noel, Missouri. They resided in Noel, until returning to Weeping Water in 1966. Her organization affiliations included the Royal Neighbors of America, Navy Mothers Club, the Ground Observer Corps and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the Weeping Water Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, Samuel; one daughter, Thelma; two sons, Jean and Theodore Ward; six step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Audrey Ward of Lincoln; and one brother, Howard Mapel of Sun City, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Michael Ward, one son, Jack Ward and two brothers.
