Spangler, 90, of Omaha, formerly of Arlington, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in Millard. He was born March 8, 1918, in Nickerson to Sheldon and Josephine (Polansky) Spangler. He grew up in Nickerson and was valedictorian of his 1935 graduating class of Nickerson High School. He moved to Fremont and attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont from 1935-38. He married Lorraine Hartung on Nov. 24, 1938, in Fontanelle. The couple moved to Arlington in 1946. He was employed by Herman Oil & Transport Co., Fremont Hatchery, Hanson Audit Co., Phelps Tobacco Co. and Smoke Shop and the Nebraska Ordnance Plant at Mead prior to his U.S. Army service. He served in the pilot training program of the U.S. Army Air Corps from February 1944 through November 1945 during World War II. He then completed additional education courses at Midland Lutheran College, Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y., University of Nebraska at Omaha and at Lincoln and computer programming at Metro Tech at Elkhorn. He was employed as secretary/treasurer and comptroller for Marshall Nurseries of Arlington, Omaha, Denver and Colorado Springs from 1946-90. He then was manager and treasurer of the Marshall Company, a metal fabrication manufacturing plant franchised in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. He was simultaneously employed as an accountant for Arlington State Bank and the Arlington Insurance Agency. He provided Bell Creek Transfer a payroll and general ledger service from 1948 to 2006. He was a school board member of Arlington Public Schools for 13 years and treasurer for 42 years. He was a 56-year member of Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 52, A.F. & A.M. of Arlington; a 63-year member of American Legion Post 71 of Arlington where he previously served as adjutant, finance officer and commander. He was a member of the Arlington Community Church, having served as treasurer for 15 years. He was appointed to the consumer council of Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 12 consecutive years and was group secretary and agent for Modern Woodman of America for 10 years. He was treasurer of Arlington Township Road District 7 from 1956 through June 2001. He was a charter member of the Fremont Civil Air Patrol and held a private pilots license. Survivors include: his wife, Lorraine of Omaha; a son, Gary (and wife, Mary) Spangler of Omaha; a daughter, Karen (and husband, George) Franke of Omaha; a sister, Janet Redman of Danville, Ill.; six grandchildren, David (and wife, Wendy) Spangler, Lisa (and husband, Ron) Van Oeveren, Lori (and husband, Doug) Okuniewicz, Deborah (and husband, Kevin) Lollmann, Dan Spangler and Elizabeth Franke; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eileen Cahoon; and a brother, Keith Spangler. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Arlington Community Church with the Rev. Burt Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. today, all at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Thursday at the church. Military graveside services will be conducted by members of American Legion Post 71 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8332 of Arlington at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials have been established to the Arlington Community Church and to the Arlington Education Foundation.
