Description	:	Gordon D. Fossberg, 86, of Polk died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at Hearthstone in York. Gordon was born July 10, 1924, near Polk to Frank and Hilda (Miller) Fossberg. Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, and an infant daughter, Jane Marie. Survivors are: wife, Caryl of York; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Phil Thomas of Omaha and Rita and Rony Fowler of Hordville; sons and a daughter-in-law, Daryl Fossberg of Lincoln and Roger and Valorie Fossberg of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and Caryl's children and grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. Gordon was born July 10, 1924, near Polk to Frank and Hilda (Miller) Fossberg. Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, and an infant daughter, Jane Marie. Survivors are: wife, Caryl of York; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Phil Thomas of Omaha and Rita and Rony Fowler of Hordville; sons and a daughter-in-law, Daryl Fossberg of Lincoln and Roger and Valorie Fossberg of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and Caryl's children and grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. Gordon attended District 74 rural school and graduated from Polk High School in 1941. He moved to Hastings and worked for Maxson Construction Company and then entered the U.S. Navy in 1943. Gordon served in the South Pacific with Hedron 6 and was honorable discharged in 1946. After his military service, he returned to Hastings where he met his future wife, Mabel Hermsmeyer. They were united in marriage on March 17, 1947, in Scotia. They moved to Polk in 1948, where he worked at Sundberg and Sons and then Kansas-Nebraska Gas until his retirement in 1987. Mabel died on April 27, 1999. Gordon married Caryl Glasser in July of 2001. They lived in Polk and in February of 2008, Gordon went to live at Hearthstone in York and Caryl joined him there in November of 2008. Gordon was a member of the First Baptist Church in Polk where he served as a trustee and loved his work in the church. He loved to work around his home and in the yard. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Irvin, Kermit, and Gilbert; and sisters, Sylvia, Goldie, Maxine, Elvira, and Mary. Published in The Grand Island Independent on 10/14/2010
