He was born in Norway on Oct. 7, 1924, the son of George and Marian (Downey) Ames. Gordon graduated from Norway High School and served with the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marines during World War II. He had worked for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft in California, where he also ran an ice cream shop. Ames, 85, of Main Street died Friday, April 30, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. He was born in Norway on Oct. 7, 1924, the son of George and Marian (Downey) Ames. Gordon graduated from Norway High School and served with the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marines during World War II. He had worked for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft in California, where he also ran an ice cream shop. He and his wife returned to Maine in the late 1950s, when they opened Ames Bait Company in Readfield and, later, Ames Appliance. He was predeceased by his wife, Laura Ames, in 1994; and an infant son. He is survived by a son, Peter Ames and his wife, Roxanne, of Readfield; two grandsons, Ryan C. Ames, of San Francisco, and Nicholas Ames, of Readfield; a brother, Raymond "Skip" Ames, of Connecticut; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in Readfield Corner Cemetery. (Kennebec Journal 5/4/2010)
