Description	:	Gordon Hoxeng passed away Friday, November 26, 2010 at his Yankton residence after a seven-year battle with cancer. He was 84. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Faith United Lutheran Church, rural Volin, SD with Rev. Velma Larson officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery with military graveside rites by the Rudolph Christiansen American Legion Post #237. Arrangements were entrusted to Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton. Pallbearers were Bob South, Jerry Wuebben, Alec Solberg, Warren Broderson, Jim Brewer, and Rick Hazen. Honorary pallbearers were Dick & Arlene Fossum, Bob & Elaine List, Ken & Gerry Pederson, Addie Zeeb, & Marvin Wilcox. Gordon was born August 3, 1926, to Oscar T. and M. Lucille (Cowman) Hoxeng at the family farm in rural Volin, SD. He attended Pleasant Valley Country School for eight years, Volin High School for one year, and then lived with his grandparents and attended Gayville High School for three years, graduating in 1944. He was baptized, confirmed at, and a life-long member of Faith United (Zion Lutheran) Church, rural Volin. He helped his father on the family farm until June, 1945, when he was drafted into the army and sent to Fort Snelling in Minnesota. He then went to Fort Hood, Texas, for basic infantry training, during which time World War II ended. After basic training he was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas, as an M24 tank driver. He was stationed there until Dec. 1946, when he was discharged. He returned home to continue to help farm, taking over in 1959 after his father died. He farmed until 1986 when he retired. He married Darlene M. Hauger, on June 7, 1953. To this union three children were born: Susan, Gary, and Brian. He served on the township board and school board for many years. He also held many offices at Zion Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the Volin American Legion, serving as Sergeant of Arms for most of that time. Farming was his passion, he also enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, and most outdoor sports. In 1986 he designed and had their Lewis & Clark Lake home built, where they enjoyed many happy retirement years. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter, Susan Kelly, Bradenton, FL, sons Gary (Shirley) Hoxeng; and Brian (Brenda) Hoxeng, of rural Volin, one grandson, Boyt Hoxeng; brother, Keith Hoxeng, five sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Olaf and Laura Hauger; brother, Wesley Hoxeng; and son-in-law, Jay Kelly.
