Gordon (Gordy) Lee Mayer was born in a car during a blizzard near Lincoln Valley, ND on March 1, 1946 to Holdrich and Martha (Bender) Mayer. Gordy’s unique entrance to this world proved how special Gordy’s life was about to be. Gordy’s childhood included living in Lincoln Valley, Linton, McClusky, Mercer, Turtle Lake, Bismarck, and Flasher North Dakota. Gordy met the love of his life, Sandy Ferderer in high school in Flasher, ND and have been inseparable for the past 53 years. They were married on May 27, 1967. Gordy graduated from NDSU in 1969 and began his Pharmacy career at Krohn’s Service Drug in Harvey ND where he worked until he and Sandy bought the store in 1992 and renamed the store Service Drug and Gift until their retirement in 2010. The level of Gordy’s commitment and love for his business and career was undeniable. The level of trust and respect he gained with his customers is unmatched. Gordy’s customers, in Harvey and neighboring communities, always knew their wellbeing was his top priority. No one was turned away – even when a customer was unable to pay. Gordy delivered medicine to those who were unable to come to the store and mailed people their medicine free of charge when his customers moved away. Every holiday, every weekend, often in the middle of the night there would be at least one trip to the pharmacy to fill a prescription for someone who was ill. And there was never a complaint from Gordy. The community of Harvey and neighboring communities were also incredibly important to Gordy. He was a charter volunteer of the Harvey Ambulance Service, he was involved in the Jaycees, Park Board, Hav-It Services, First Lutheran Church, First State Bank, numerous other boards and community activities. Gordy’s leadership with the Harvey Eagles Club, where he served as President and was currently Treasurer, was also a passion. One of Gordy’s proudest achievements was receiving the Bowl of Hygeia, which recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership. Gordy loved playing golf, especially at the Harvey Country Club. And he loved his NDSU Bison. He watched every football game, wore his Bison gear proudly, including his green & gold Bison bib overalls, and proudly sang his Bison fight songs. But he knew and watched far more than just the Bison. He knew the names of players, coaches, mascots, conferences – drawing from a deep well of knowledge about college football, basketball, the NFL, and major league baseball acquired from years of being a fan amongst fans. Gordy even refereed high school basketball and even assisted with play by play occasionally on KHND. Gordy is survived by his wife, Sandra Mayer; daughter Nicole (John) Crabtree; son Eric (Amy) Mayer; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Alex, Zachary, Matthew, Emelia and Cecelia; one great-grandson, Layne; sister, Beverly George; brother, Orv (Diana) Mayer; sister-in-law Eileen Mayer. Gordy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rick; brother-in-law, Bob George. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND.
