Smith, 93, formerly of West Main Street, Warner and more recently a resident of Woodlawn Care Center, died Thursday, March 3, 2022 at the New London Hospital. He was born in Concord, NH on December 14, 1928 the son of Charles B. and Roxie H. (Bunnell) Smith. He served in the US Army from 1946-1948 and then the Reserves where he retired as Sgt. From 1948-1954 Gordon worked for Kearsarge Motors in Warner doing auto and truck repairs. In 1954, he went to work for Merrimack County Telephone Company in Warner as a lineman, work foreman and left in 1974 as the plant superintendent. People will remember his warm and friendly nature at the Sutton Rest Area where he helped folks from 1974-1986 and then was an Engineer for the State of NH until his retirement in 1989. Gordon worked for Cricenti's Markets in New London, Warner, Hillsboro and Bristol for about 10 years where he excelled in landscaping and property maintenance. Gordon had been very active in Warner serving as fireman and policeman, on the Planning Board and also the Merrimack County Telephone Company Board of Directors. He enjoyed being outdoors whether working in his garden's, mowing his lawn or getting his wood ready. No matter what chore he was doing, he would always stop and come in for a visit at his kitchen table whenever family or friends stopped by. In the winter, he would go south (to his basement) where he would work on his many indoor hobbies and tend to his wood furnace but he would always come upstairs to watch the Celtics games. His wife, Ruth E. (Redman) Smith, died in 2006. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Joan; a sister, Marjorie and three brothers, Paul, Richard and Donald. Members of his surviving family include his children, David and Jennifer of Newbury, NH, Gary and Tracy of Charlestown, NH, Elliot and Susan of New London, NH, Richard and Laura of Lyman, ME, Peter and Denise of Warner, NH and Janice of Columbus, NC; 13 grandchildren (who knew him as Gumpy) DJ, Tiffany, Brittany, Aaron, Megan, Elliot III, Parker, Gary, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Aaron, Jillian and Jenna; several great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Dean and Roxanne of Warner, NH; nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery Annex, Warner, NH with military honors conducted by the US Army. The family extends our gratitude to the entire staff at Woodlawn for the tender loving care you gave our Dad over the past 6 plus years. You are part of his family.
