Gordon Neal Soneson, 85 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. He was born on April 5, 1936, west of Axtell, Nebraska in Kearney County, the third of four children born to Carl, Sr. and Metta Kirstina (Schmidt) Soneson. Gordon was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church, and received his education from Holdrege Public Schools and then attended and graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1954. Gordon was awarded the American Farmer Award through the FFA, following his graduation. Following his education, he began farming with his father. On April 29, 1956, Gordon was united in marriage to Lucille Belle Olson at Bethel Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on a farm in the Funk area, where Gordon began farming and raising cattle. The couple was blessed with three children: Michael, Jeffrey and Cherie. Gordon was a member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk; the Funk Lions Club; served on the Phelps Memorial Hospital Board; and was currently serving on the Board of Directors at CNPPID. Gordon always wanted to be productive and enjoyed staying busy helping his family in any way possible. He dearly loved his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille; great-grandson, Kale Soneson; his brother, Carl "Bud" Soneson, Jr.; two sisters-in-law: Rogene Peterson; and Lois Rydlund and her husband, Bill ; and three brothers-in-law: Paul Murdoch; Kenneth Olson; and Karl Gugel. He leaves to mourn his death, his three children: Mike Soneson and his wife, Marcia of rural Holdrege; Jeff Soneson and his wife, Deb of rural Funk; and Cherie Brendel and her husband, Scott of Holdrege; nine grandchildren: Brent Soneson and wife, Abbie; Ethan Soneson and wife, Kaylie; Heather McQuillan and husband, Chris; Brooke Wheeler and husband, Greg; Amy Carpenter and Quinton Standage; Kinsey Koch and husband, Justin; Kirsten Hernandez and her husband, Angel; Evan Soneson; and Hunter Brenn; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Ardyce Murdoch of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Marline Gugel of Holdrege; three sisters-in-law: Loretta Sturgis and her husband, Dale of rural Holdrege; Peggy Soneson of St. Paul, Nebraska; and Gwen (Olson) Hardin of Holdrege; one brother-in-law, Paul Peterson of Bertrand, Nebraska; special cousin, John Schmidt of Kearney, Nebraska; many extended family members; close friends: Margy Hilsabeck; Tyler McClymont; and Chuck Carpenter; along with many other friends. The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege was in charge of the arrangements.
