Gordon & Phyllis had three daughters: Nina, Phyllis and Catherine (who also drowned that day at Wrightsville Beach) Statesville Daily Record (NC); 28 June 1955 Rescue Attempt Brings Tragedy WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH - The Coast Guard resumed a search at daylight today for the body of Gordon Hinkle, 45, of Spencer, Neb., believed drowned in a vain attempt to rescue his 11-year-old daughter when she was swept out to sea. A Coast Guard picket boat recovered the body of Catherine Hinkle yesterday about 40 minutes after the tragedy occurred at nearby Moore's Inlet. Her 13-year-old sister, Phyllis, and a cousin, William Feaster, 55, of Hazleton, Pa., were rescued by lifeguards after they joined in the rescue attempt. Authorities said the younger girl apparently fell into a hole while the Hinkle and Feaster families walked along the beach. When she was caught in the swift current and her sister and the two men plunged into the water after her. Mrs. Feaster and Mrs. Hinkle remained on shore and summoned help. Doctors at a local hospital worked for three hours in a vain attempt to revive the younger girl. Her sister and Feaster were released after treatment. Coast Guard authorities said the picket boat and a helicopter from Elizabeth City would resume the search for Hinkle's body today.
