Services were conducted by Reverend J Kromnein of the Reformed Church of Eureka assisted by Reverend E H Sprenger of the Selby Congregational Church. Special music consisted of duets by Mr. and Mrs. Fred C Wilff and by Misses Allegra Biel and Norma Rau. Interment was made in the Reformed cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Bieber, Christ H Wolff, Ed Gill, John Schneider, Henry Kast and Fred Bauer. Gottlieb Jr. was born May 06, 1866, in Johannesthal, South Russia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Bertsch. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith, in Russia. At the age of 18 years he came to the United States, living at Menno, South Dakota, for a year then went to a farm north of Eureka, South Dakota. On May 16, 1892, he married Katherina Hauck at Mound City, South Dakota, and the couple farmed near Eureka until 1895 when they settled on a homestead, 14 miles northwest of Java, where they lived until December 1934. They retired from farming that year and moved to Java where they have since made their home. When he grew to manhood, Mr. Bertsch became a member of the Reformed church and remained a faithful member until the time of his death. He began ailing about a year ago and on April 0, 1948, became seriously ill with a heart ailment and was bedfast from that time until his his death. He died at the age of 82 years, one month and three days on June 09, 1948. He leaves to mourn him, his wife, Katherina; and ten children, Adolf of Brookings, South Dakota, Mathilda (Albert) Buechler of Lodi, California, Katherine (Jacob) Buechler of Glasgow, Montana, Amelia (Emanuel) Buechler of Lodi, Robert of American Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Edward G Biel of Java, Martha (Rueben) Milliman of Minneapolis, Emma (Adam) Rieger of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Carl of Cornelius, Oregon, and Elizabeth (John) Dooley of St. Paul, Minnesota; 21 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three half brothers and one half sister. He was preceded in death by two sons, Henry in infancy, and William, four years ago.
