Read More	Gottlieb C. Benning, 61, cashier of the Bank of Madison, who had suffered two strokes of paralysis in the last few weeks, died about noon Saturday at his home (Madison). He was born April 21, 1883, at Effingham, Ill. the son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Benning. He received his education in Norfolk high school and the Norfolk College of Business. From 1904 to 1906, he was assistant cashier of the Meadow Grove State bank, and from 1906 to 1915 was cashier of the Battle Creek Valley bank. He then took up ranching in Montana, but returned in 1916 to Nebraska to become cashier of the Monowi State bank. From 1921 to 1925, he was cashier of the Battle Creek Valley bank, following which he came to Norfolk to serve for ten years as secretary and treasurer of the Norfolk Livestock Sales company. From 1937 until his death he was cashier of the Bank of Madison. He was a member of the Madison Rotary and Commercial clubs and a member of the Lutheran church. Mr. Benning, whose first wife preceded him in death, was married June 5, 1925, at Yankton to Margaret F. Strope, who survives. He also is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Crane Jr., resident of California, and Mrs. Marvin Hicks, Omaha, and his sister, Mrs. John A. Ballantyne Jr., Norfolk. His son, Donald, died more than a year ago while in the army. Funeral plans had not been made Saturday afternoon, but services will probably be held Tuesday. Source: "The Norfolk Daily News" Sat. Born April 21, 1883, at Effingham, Ill., Mr. Benning died on the twenty-first anniversary of the birh of his son, PFC Donald Benning, who died April 26, 1944, in an army hospital. Mr. Benning was baptized and spent his early childhoold at Effingham, where he attended school until he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Benning, to Norfolk. He was confirmed in Christ Lutheran Church at Norfolk, April 11, 1897, by the Rev. J. P. Mueller. On July 1, 1927, he was elected secretary and treasurer of the Norfolk Livestock Sales company, and served that firm for ten years. While serving in that capacity, he was affiliated with Grace Lutheran Church. He and his associates on Oct. 6, 1937, opened the Bank of Madison which he served as cashier and manager until his death. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Monday morning, March 26, while at his office, and was taken to his home. He apparently was recovering from the stroke until he suffered a second one Tuesday night. April 3. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church at Madison and the Madison Chamber of Commerce, and a charter member of the Madison Rotary club. Surviviors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Marvin Hicks, Omaha, and Mrs. William Crane Jr., Culver City, Calif.; three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs John A.
