Description	:	The first mention of Gottlieb Kale was the 1865 Kansas State Census. His father now had the English equivalent of his name Frederick, and Gottlieb was listed as Calep. The vagaries of drought, grasshopper plagues, flood and other challenges for farmers must have spurred Gottlieb to seek a more stable and profitable occupation. Additionally in 1868 he married Kate Heimerich of Riley County. By 1878 Gottlieb and Kate had six children. Additionally in 1868 he married Kate Heimerich of Riley County. By 1878 Gottlieb and Kate had six children. In 1878 the Clay County Directory listed Gottlieb(spelled correctly) as the owner of a general store. This might be the same general store that his father owned in 1884. Gottlieb was active in the political affairs and was on the first council when Clay Center was declared a city of the second class in 1880. Two historical events defined the Kuhnles and the Matthews by this time. The web of railroad lines during the next two decades in Kansas served to increase the population from 100,000 to over a million. The railways facilitated the connection of small Kansas towns and promoted commerce which worked to Gottlieb’s advantage. The second event was George Eastman who with his Kodak brought photography to the masses as the average person could now afford to partake of something that was earlier viewed as a luxury. This allowed future descendants to see their ancestors as both families indulged in photography with enthusiasm. 1n 1882 the Kansas Central Railway came into Miltonvale from Leavenworth Kansas. This narrow gauge railroad was the incentive for Gottlieb to move his family from Clay Center to Miltonvale in 1884 and by 1885 he was listed as a dealer in General Merchandise. By 1886 Gottlieb and Kate had a family of ten. In 1887 The Santa Fe laid rail through Miltonvale and Gottlieb built the Kuhnle Opera House which was a popular gathering place for the locals. One never-to-be forgotten occasion was a church program at Christmas time in 1890. The stage was replete with everything, including a Christmas tree sixteen feet high and at the proper time Kale (Gottlieb) rode on the stage in an old cutter (a type of sleigh). One gentleman Roy Phelps recalled that he received a book Jack the Giant Killer, the first gift he received off of a Christmas tree. His dad was unhappy about the choice, since gift giving was part of a church service, but Roy was thrilled and remembered that event for the rest of his life. In 1893 Gottlieb traveled the rails to Colorado and by 1894 brought his family with him. Sons Charlie and Frederick stayed in Miltonvale. Norman lived with his brother Charlie and wife Clara with their small son Kale age three. Paulina may have been engaged and she remained in Kansas. The remaining six went on to Colorado. Why did Gottlieb move? His first stop was Colorado Springs. In the Federal Census of 1900 Gottlieb and his youngest son Willie were listed as gold miners. There is a faded photograph of three miners taken at Pike’s Peak Summit Aug. 15, 1897, but no one is identifiable as a Kuhnle. One of the few stories handed down by Gottlieb’s descendants was of a relative who made a profitable living selling ice boxes in the summer to miners and then returning in the winter to sell heat stoves taking the ice boxes in trade. This story can be attributed to Gottlieb. In the 1902 Colorado Springs City Directory Gottlieb is listed as a carpenter. In the Federal Census of 1910 Gottlieb and Willie were listed as owning a farm in Montana, Jefferson, Colorado. By 1913 Gottlieb had moved to Denver and established the South Broadway Furniture Co. His youngest son Willie was the only male Kuhnle who stayed in Colorado. He aided his father with this endeavor and upon his father’s retirement remained as a salesman. Following the death of Kate in 1924, Gottlieb lived with Willie and his family at 1925 South Bannock, a few doors from where he had lived with Kate. Upon his death, he was returned to Kansas to be buried close to his parents.
