Description	:	Gottlieb served as an apprentice for two years at the shoemaker's trade while living in Switzerland. In the year 1866, he came to this country from his native land and settled in Wawaka, Elkhart Township, Noble, Indiana, USA. In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, he was shown as a shoemaker and his real estate was valued at $800.00 and his personal estate valued at $200.00. The 1880 Wawaka, Elkhart Township, Noble, Indiana, USA Census shows him living there with his wife Nancy and daughters, Fannie F., Jennie, Cora, Ivia and son Clarence. They lived in close proximity to his brother, Frederick. He moved to Albion, Albion Township, Noble, Indiana, USA in 1887 and built the building at 118 N. Orange St. Following his inclination and previous training, he continued to engage in shoemaking and in the boot and shoe trade. This business continued through the date of the writing dated 1892 which was the date of the county history this information came from. It was the only establishment of this kind in the village. He and his wife, Nancy lived in an apartment above this business. In the Albion Census of 1900 Gottlieb was age 55, Nancy, age 50 both living with daughters Ivia V. and Edna J. and son Avon. At his death he was the oldest businessman in Albion. He was able to draw custom from a large section of the surrounding country by paying close attention to his trade. It is said that his son Clarence died after falling out of his high chair. Gottlieb was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge, I.O.O.F. of Ligonier, Perry Township, Noble, Indiana, USA and was the oldest member of it. When a boy he became a member of the German Reformed Church in Switzerland. The following is Gottlieb's Obituary:- ------------------------------------ Gottlieb Schwab, son of John and Anna Schwab, was born in Switzerland, 12 Dec 1844; died in Albion, Albion Township, Noble, Indiana, USA, 8 Nov 1926; aged 81 years, 10 months and 27 days. He was the youngest of a family of seven children, five boys and two girls. All have preceded him in death. At the age of 21, he came to the USA, locating in Wawaka, Elkhart Township, Noble, Indiana, USA, where he lived until 1887, when he came to Albion, Albion Township, Noble, Indiana, USA. He was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Hursey, 29 Oct 1868, to which union was born seven children, two boys and five girls, two of whom, Frances Beck and Clarence, preceded him in death. Mrs. Schwab also passed away in Jun 1902. He then married to Isadora Bales on 25 May 1907. When a boy he became a member of the German Reformed church in Switzerland. He was the oldest member of the I. 0. 0. F. of Ligonier and the oldest businessman in our town, being the shoe man of Albion. Mr. Schwab was a kind husband, an affectionate father, an honest citizen and an industrious businessman. He is survived by his widow, five children, Jennie Gonser of Vancouver, Washington, USA.; Edna Otto, Deshler, Ohio, USA; Cora Netz, Toledo, Lucas, Ohio, USA; Avon Dale Schwab of Albion, Albion Township, Noble, Indiana, USA, and Iva Kinney of near Ligonier, Noble, Indiana, USA. Also 13 Grandchildren and four Great-Grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the home of his son, Avon Dale, Wednesday afternoon at 2 O'clock, Rev. H. C. Kleckner being in charge, assisted by Rev. Hockstedler of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Probate Records: Schwab Gottlieb, died 8 Nov 1926.
