He was one of a large family of brothers and sisters. Land holdings in the little republic were small, and in 1837 his father determined to emigrate to America where he could find more room for his flock of boys and girls. After a tempestuous voyage by sailing vessel, the family reached the promised land and pushing westward wintered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then but little more than a military outpost. In the following spring the trek of the west was resumed until the Sciota valley was reached in the state of Ohio. This was then Indian country, lately opened to entry. It was densely timbered, but the soil was rich, and the head of the house determined to make it his home. Thus began the long, arduous task of hewing a farm out of the heavy oak and walnut timber land of that region. With the aid of the boyse, this was finally accomplished, and today the place is coneded to be one of the best farms in Ohio. It was under such circumstances of pioneer life that the subject of this sketch grew up. Arriving at early manhood, he was apprenticed to the blacksmith trade, and became an expert "carriage ironer." This was in the days of the stage coach and before the advent of the factory buggy. In 1854 he was married to Mary M. Steiner. This woman came from a family of soldiers. Her father and his brothers were in the Bavarian forces that formed a part of the army of Napoleon. Her mother's brother was one of the body guards of Napoleon in the famous Russian campaign. He was at the burning of Moscow, and one of those who survived the disastrous retreat that followed. Afterward he was at Waterloo and witnessed the final overthrow of his chief by the united forces of England and Prussia under Wellington and Blucher. Soon after his marriage the subject of this sketch associated with his elder brother in merchandising at Keaton and Lima, Ohio, and in 1859 begame the proprietor of the latter business. He was successful and during the Civil War, which soon followed he accumulated a competency. During this period, too, he have much of his time to soldier relief work, and was made trustee of a public fund which had been voted for the aid of widows and orphans of those who lost their lives in the great conflict. After the war came the reaction, and a period of intense business depression followed. Thousands of once prosperous business men "went to the wall" and among them the subject of this sketch. Ina financial sense, he never recovered from the blow, but in the discharge of his duty to his family, he "stood by his guns" with unwavering courage, supporting and protecting it, and affording his children the best educational facilities available under the circumstances. In 1890 the pioneering spirit again asserted itself, and he brought his family to the Big Bend, in Washington, where he continued to reside until the time of his death, which occurred on February 23, 1921, at the ripe age of 89 years, 3 months and 20 days. He left a considerable family of children who feel a just pride in the courage and fortitude manifesterd by their sturdy old forbear under many circumstances of adversity and distress.
