She passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva on September 24, 1990, at the age of 97 years, 5 months and 26 days. DeBont was born March 29, 1893, at Prairie City, Ia., to John and Minnie Stumm DeBont. She passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva on September 24, 1990, at the age of 97 years, 5 months and 26 days. When she was a small child, the family moved from Jasper county, a farm east of Woodward, Ia., where Grace attended school in Xenia District up to the eighth grade. After graduation, she took her teaching training at Boone, Ia., and taught mining schools, where half of the children could speak no English. She walked four to five miles one way each day to school. On December 16, 1915, she married Bert Horton of Woodward, Ia. They lived on a farm southeast of Woodward and it was here that their daughter, Wilma, was born in 1917. After having their farm sale, they moved to Geneva in 1958 to be near their daughter and grandchildren. While in Geneva, she was a member of the South Madison Extension Club and the neighborhood card club. Grace maintained a lifelong interest in flowers and her vegetable garden. After the death of her husband, Bert, in November of 1964, Grace remained at her home caring for her garden and she enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren when their mothers ran errands. She entered Heritage of Geneva nursing home in May of 1984, and made her home there until her death She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert; brother, Frank; sister, Florence; and by a brother-in-law, George Bristle. She is survived by her daughter, Wilma, and husband John Taylor; grandchildren, Sharon Elznic and husband, Larry, Shirley Sluka and husband, Edward, Sandra Petersen and husband, Richard; and John Taylor Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; a sister, Elizabeth Bristle; sister-in-law, Rose DeBont; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva on Thursday, September 27, with the Rev. Stanley Rider officiating. Mrs. Carole Prater accompanied Curtis Prater, who sang, “Going Down the Valley” and “The Church in the Wildwood.” Casket bearers were David and Dale Elznic, Mike and Roger Sluka, Dean Gerberding and David Varner.
