Description	:	DE SMET — Grace E. Wellman, 87, De Smet, died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at a De Smet care center. Funeral services will be at American Lutheran Church in De Smet, with the Rev. Randy Koeller officiating. Burial will follow in the De Smet Cemetery. Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet is in charge of arrangements. Grace E. Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet is in charge of arrangements. Grace E. Mundhenke was born March 29, 1920 to Harry and Alice (Meyer) Mundhenke at Willow Lake. She grew up in the De Smet area and attended Vaughan Country School through the eighth grade. She worked on the farm with her folks, as well as several other jobs during her teenage years. She married Claus Smith on March 12, 1941 at Monroe. The couple farmed in the De Smet area. To this union two children were born, Marjorie and Claus Smith. She became Kingsbury County Auditor in 1957 and continued to 1961. She then owned and operated De Smet Drycleaning for four years. In 1975 Grace again became Kingsbury County Auditor and continued through her retirement in 1983 after 24 years of working as Auditor and Treasurer. Claus died March 23, 1978. She continued to live in De Smet and later married Carroll Wellman in July of 1979. Carroll died Jan. 12, 2001. She was a very giving and helpful person. Much of her time was spent visiting with others and finding ways to be of help. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in De Smet, the BPW (Business and Professional Women), the American Legion Auxiliary, the Let's Go Club, and many other community groups. She enjoyed spending her retirement years in Arizona and Texas. Survivors include one daughter, Marjorie Smith, Mandan, N.D.; one son, Claus Smith, California; two brothers, August (Diddy) Mundhenke, De Smet and Marvin (Ralene) Mundhenke, Mesa, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Bernice Mundhenke, De Smet; two stepchildren, Ray Dean (Bev) Wellman, Sioux Falls, and Allen (Joann) Wellman, Lincoln, Neb.; eight step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and one very special companion, Kenneth Vaughan, Galveston, Texas.
