Read More	When GRACE ELIZABETH FLEMING was born on Wednesday, 20 Mar 1907, in Washburn, McLean County, North Dakota, her father, Joe Fleming, was 32 years old and her mother, Josephine, was 30. Her younger sister, May, was born 2 years later in 1909. Grace received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon in Eugene; and she received her Master of Science degree from Humboldt State College located in Arcata, Humboldt County, California. As a 28-year old single woman, she made a visit to Europe; and on 8 Aug 1935, she returned from Le Havre, France, aboard the ship ‘Manhatten’ to the port in New York. At age 30 in 1937, she married Abraham L ‘Abe’ Fraser (1898-1980), a bookkeeper in the lumber mill industry who lived his entire life in Eureka, Humboldt County, California. Abe was previously married in 1923 to Winona Mildred Barker, and they had a son and daughter before their ±1929 divorce. By the 1930 U.S. Census, Abe and his two children were living in Eureka with his parents, James Thomas Fraser (1868–1953) and Dora Bessie Zerlang (1874–1949). For 40 years, Grace taught English and Psychology in the Eureka California public schools. She touched the lives of many students in such positive ways. She was very well organized, had high standards, expected the best from her students, and was adept at motivating them, even including her occasional humor. She greeted each class with “Good morning (or afternoon), class!” And if the students didn’t all reply in unison, “Good morning, Mrs. Fraser!” she would repeat her greeting. In her 11th grade English classes, every year during December she put up a huge banner that stretched above the front blackboard across the entire width of the classroom—KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS. For each day of the week, her students knew what their assignments would be: Monday for composition; Tuesday for vocabulary using “WordWealth” for prefix, suffix and root word knowledge; Wednesday for poetry, memorizing stacks of index cards; Thursday for literature; and Friday for oral reports. As an advisor to the Eureka High School Career Girls Club, she also motivated the girls in her classes to become professionals. This CAREER GIRLS CREED came from a 1904 poem entitled “Collect for Club Women” by Mary Stewart: • Keep us, O God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. • Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking. • May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face—without self-pity and without prejudice. • May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous. • Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle. • Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straightforward and unafraid. • Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are at one. • And may we strive to touch and to know the great, common human heart of us all, and O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind! In 1972, after retiring from teaching, Grace moved to Salem, Oregon. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, University Women and Professional Women; and she enjoyed traveling, reading and playing bridge. At the age of 91, she died in Salem, Marion County, Oregon, on Tuesday, 16 Feb 1999. At the time of her death, survivors included her son, David Fleming Fraser of Mountain View, California; step-son, Robert Louis Fraser (1925-2008) of Palamino Estates, California; step-daughter Barbara Jean Fraser Stewart of Eureka; and two grandchildren. Funeral services for her were held at the Capital Manor, a Retirement Community in Salem Oregon. Her body was then transferred to Eureka where she is buried in Ocean View Cemetery, as her spirit awaits the Second Coming of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
