Description	:	Grace Mathews Grace E. Stucker Mathews, 100, of Danville, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Unit in Burlington. Born June 22, 1909, on the family farm northeast of Danville, she was the daughter of James Preston and Birdie Marie Jacoba Stucker. On February 12, 1930, she married Port Mathews at his parents' home. They farmed together for nearly 60 years raising Guernsey and Angus cattle. Stucker Mathews, 100, of Danville, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Unit in Burlington. Born June 22, 1909, on the family farm northeast of Danville, she was the daughter of James Preston and Birdie Marie Jacoba Stucker. On February 12, 1930, she married Port Mathews at his parents' home. They farmed together for nearly 60 years raising Guernsey and Angus cattle. She attended Snyder one-room school house and graduated from Danville High School in 1928. She was a member of Danville Garden Club, First Congregational Church in Burlington, the neighborhood coffee club, and was a 17-year 4-H leader and judged at local county fairs. She received an award from the Des Moines County Extension Service for her numerous years of volunteering for the 4-H programs. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, traveling, helping her husband on the farm, cooking and baking for her family, and was an excellent seamstress, sewing wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses for family weddings. Surviving are her two sons, Dr. Leslie (Mary) Mathews, D.V.M. of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Dwayne (Georgia) Mathews of Danville; six grandchildren, Debbie Mathews of Danville, Steve Mathews of West Virginia, Monica Myers of Burlington, Melody Mathews of Georgia, Mike Mathews of England, and Dawn Mackey of New London; along with fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Hazel Lord and Joy White both of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be Sunday, September 27th, at Lunning Chapel from noon until 8:00 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. The service for Mrs. Mathews will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel with the Reverend Jonathan Noble officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery, rural Danville. A memorial has been established for Des Moines County Friends of 4-H.
