Grace Ethyl McDowell was born 23 Jan 1926 to Ray and Haeryette (Johnson) Bridge. She attended school and graduated from Bondurant High School She also graduated from Felt and Tarrant Comptometer School in Des Moines. She then located a job with the F.W. Fitch Shampoo Co. in Des Moines as an office worker. Grace met Bob McDowell in February, 1946 at the Tromar Ballroom in Des Moines. They were united in marriage 2 Nov 1946 at the Bondurant Federated Church. They settled on the family farm and remained married for 61 years. Together they raised three boys. Later in life they had two grandchildren nearby and she spent many hours teaching and caring for them. She was excited to become a Great Grandmother in recent years. Grace loved to raise garden produce and help out on the farm wherever she could. Among those many chores were caring for sick animals, walking beans and driving the ‘H’ for the hay fork. She nursed a sickly yellow kitten back to health which would become a long time family pet named ‘Bill’. Grace also was good at her crafts especially making cornhusk dolls. She would even give demonstrations on how to make them at various clubs and meetings. She would use any money she made from selling her creations to buy things for their house. Grace had a fun loving personality and exchanged jokes and pranks with friends and neighbors. She enjoyed entertaining at home. One of her friends group called themselves ‘The Butterfly Girls’. She was a member of H.O.A. (Help One Another) club, the Child Guidance club, and the West Fork United Methodist Church. Most of all, she loved her family. For the last eleven years of his life, Bob had Alzheimer ’s disease. Grace devotedly cared for him so he could be at home where he was most comfortable. After Bob’s death, Grace was successfully treated and became a cancer survivor. Grace is survived by sons: Bruce (Anne), Camarillo, CA; Alan, Fairfield, OH; and Mark (Connie), Hampton; four grandchildren: Andrew (Nicole), Davenport; Melinda (Wes) Tremmel, Garner; Kim (Vince) Feck, Keller, TX; Scott McDowell, Springfield, MO; 2 great grandchildren: Lily and Emma McDowell, daughters of Andrew and Nicole; sister: Florence (Roy) Bishop, Ankeny. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband Bob.
