She passed away on June 6, 1999, at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont, at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 23 days. She was one of seven children in the family. Grace grew up on a farm near Inman and attended rural school there. She then attended high school in Inman through the 10th grade. She was baptized into the Catholic Church in O’Neill. Grace was married to Franklin Earl Sumner of Sept. 8, 1930, at Plainview and to them two children were born. Following their marriage they spent several years in Neligh. Grace worked as a nurse’s aide at the Antelope County Hospital in Neligh. They moved to Portland, Ore., in 1954 where she again worked as a nurse’s aide in a nursing home and later in the payroll department of the Portland Police Bureau until her retirement in 1990. She moved to Geneva in 1991, taking up residency at Pioneer Manor, where she resided until the time of her death. Grace loved to garden and was an avid reader of mystery novels. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles. While her health permitted she was always an active member of her local Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Margaret Boyle; four sisters and one brother; and by her husband Franklin Sumner. She is survived by her son, James Sumner and his wife Elizabeth; daughter, Donna Rheiner and husband, Robert; sister, Bridget Schneider; 8 grandchildren 10 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Geneva at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 10, 1999, with Father Victor Derwinski officiating. Carol Prater accompanied Shelbi Clark who sang “Amazing Grace” and the St. Joseph Women’s Choir. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons, Michael Glasscock, Michael Sumner, J.C. Goodwin and Travis J. Goodwin and nephews, Andy Ramold and Thomas Schneider. Interment was in the Geneva City Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal June 16th, 1999 page 2.
