Watkins The Winfield Tribune Winfield, Kansas Thursday, February 22, 1906 Page 3 Mrs. Frank Watkins Died Last Friday After a Short Illness. Mrs. Grace Gafney Watkins was born on the 29th day of January, 1881, in Cowley county, Kansas, and died on the 16th day of February 1906. She graduated from the Winfield high school in the spring of 1900, after which she was a teacher in the county for three years. On the 8th of June, 1904, she was married to Frank C. Watkins of this city, and only a few months ago they completed for them a beautiful home on East Eleventh avenue where they were living at the time of her last illness. She became a member of the Christian church at the early age of twelve years, and ever remained a true and faithful member. She was one of God's true workers; having perfect faith and confidence in Him herself, she labored that others might enjoy the same blessed relation. There was never a moment during her Christian life when she lacked confidence in the final triumph of her Master's work. The church loses in her one of it's most active and energetic members. She has always from her childhood, occupied a position of honor in some department of the church work. For years she had been a teacher in the Sunday school, besides holding almost continuously some position in the Y.P.S.C.E. Her beautiful christian life is well worthy of emulation. The greatest tribute that can be said to any one can justly be paid to her, - she was faithful. She has come, lived among us and gone forever, but the radient memory of her beautiful life will long remain to bless the lives of those who knew her best. The Funeral The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Christian church and the building, yard and street surrounding the church were crowded to overflowing with the personal friends of the deceased. The floral supply of Winfield green houses was exhausted and beautiful designs were brought from Wichita, Arkansas City and several points in Oklahoma to pay tribute to her memory. Every department of the church and Sunday school was represented in the floral offerings and the choir chair, so long occupied by the loved one, was draped with white crape and flanked by sheafs of fragrant carnations. A quartette composed of Miss Mayme Bailey, Mrs. John Schwantes, Messrs, W.V. Williams and Clarence Basset sang favorite selections: "There's Only One," "When The Curtians are Lifted What Shall I see," and "Will There be any Stars in My Crown." Revs. Guy and Nichols conducted the services selecting the funeral oration from John 1-4, "In Him was life and the last was the light of men." The pall bearers were Dr. Bricker, Messrs, Frank Huston, Harley Tonkinson, John Schwantes, Bert Smith and E.M. Chase. Interment was made in Union Cemetery.
