"Grace Ladd was born January 26th, 1834, and died November 15th, 1889, aged 55 years, 9 months and 19 days. "She was born, reared and lived all her life at the place where she died, and of her it can be truly said, 'an unsung heroine is gone'; for there is a true grandeur in a life well spent in a struggle with the prosaic affairs of this world, and a brave standing-up for sturdy faith in what is plainly right and duty. "She came of a long line of Quaker ancestry, every one of whom was a stern believer in and practitioner of the homely and old-fashioned virtues honesty, economy, truth, integrity and plainness. "Grace was a believer in these things and she had the courage of conviction. She was essentially a 'level-headed' woman, true as steel in everything of worth; a despiser of shame and a lover of whatsoever is good and true, just and right. "To say this would sound like hollow verbiage; if we did not all know that at a time in her life when the minds of common mortals are usually filled with thoughts light and joyful, and full of hope, she assumed a charge left to her by her dying father, and in that sad hour she put away childish things and all the hopeful joys that belong to healthy young girlhood, and bravely begun the battle of life for others. "No devotee ever assumed the vows and veil of life sacrifice with a more complete abnegation of self than did Grace Ladd when she entered upon her life's duty and labors, and we, her neighbors, know what they have been. And when her work was done she was ready to face death like a brave Christian woman; nor could the agony of intense pain take her mind from the thought of others. "When she had asked her physician as to her chance of life and he could give her no hope, she asked him to say nothing about her dangerous state, because it would only grieve her friends to know what they could not help, 'and trouble comes soon enough at best,' she said. She was so thoroughly ready for the end that she said she had 'no further preparations to make.' "Her only request was that her sister, Margery, and husband, who have for the last two years been superintendent and matron of the County Infirmary, should return home. They immediately resigned and began to move their effects, but her disease progressed so rapidly that they had not completed their arrangements when she died. "A brave life is gone out, a good woman is dead, a work has been well done that is the story. Their silent examples of devotion to duty are as well dressed and fitted stones in the great building of human society, not much observed when in place, but taken away they leave a broken portion and a painful vacuity. "A few build better than they know, because an all-wise hand over rules the thoughtless, but fewer there are who build the lest they know, being ruled by the same hand. Of the latter class was Grace Ladd she did what she could."
