The charge tore away a portion of the heart causing instant death. The undoubted cause of the terrible deed was the brooding over troubles which have piled themselves upon his head thick and fast during the past few months and years. Some two years ago he lost his residence by fire, since which time the family has been quartered in a commodious out-building. Following this came domestic trouble, resulting in his wife obtaining a divorce some months ago. His most intimate friends state that all this unbalanced his mind, and his most recent trouble, facing an indictment in the Federal court at Columbus last Thursday, on the charge of sending forbidden matter in the shape of suggestive and indecent letters to his wife, through the United States mails, with the further prospect of having to stand trial within a few weeks after pleading not guilty and being released on bond, appears to be the result of a weakening mind, which determined upon suicide as the best means of ending it all. Sane or insane, Johnson's last thought was for his five sons, all boys in their teens and pathetic indeed was the discovery of their photographs carefully wrapped, lying on a table beside his dead body, with these words written upon the wrapper as his last act before he ended his life: "I want these used as flowers for my funeral" with the added words: "This is sad." Johnson's rash act seems to have been premeditated, as his actions indicate. Released on bond from the Federal court last Thursday, he arrived in Athens on the noon K & M train Friday, immediately took the B & O and went to Parkersburg, where he remained but an hour or so, returning to Frost on the afternoon local. He was seen about Frost by several persons and was intoxicated. He talked with one of his sons about going home, but did not show up at home until the middle of the forenoon Saturday. Subsequent inquiry revealed the fact that he had wandered about until two o'clock Saturday morning, when he went to the home of Tim Russell, a distant neighbor, where he remained the balance of the night and ate his breakfast, then going home. About noon he told his son Hobert to go to the home of his brother, Clarence Johnson, and telephone to another of his sons to come home, that he was going away and wanted to see him. While Hobert was gone--possibly three quarters of an hour--he committed suicide, and the boy, returning, found his father prone upon his face, the gun at his side. He gave the alarm and soon assistance arrived, but death had been instantaneous and no help could be given. The deed had been committed in a cool; premeditated manner. Rumors were heard that Johnson had threatened suicide many times recently, but these could not be verified. A viewing was held at the home of a brother, Clarence Johnson, where it had been taken. The body was brought to this city this morning and taken on to Trimble where the funeral services will be held at noon today in the Christian church. Burial will be made at Hollister. Mr. Johnson leaves five sons, Solomon, Vern, Hobert, Bradford, and Ralph; four brothers, Clarence, of Troy; Sidney, of Trimble; Bart, of Trimble; and John, of Huntington, West Virginia; and five sisters. He was the son of the late Azel Johnson, of Trimble township, and for years the family home has been in that township.
