Read More	Gretchen Evelyn Spencer Miller was born April 9, 1920, to Edwin Gurley and Myra May (Blakesley) Spencer in the farm home near Weldon, Iowa. She passed away peacefully at her home of 61 years on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the age of 98 years. She graduated from Leon High School at the age of 17, with a Normal Training Certificate and soon began her teaching career of 45 years. On June 19, 1942, she married Robert Dale Miller. To this union, one daughter, Judy, was born. Gretchen first taught rural school in Hamilton Township, earning $50.00 per month for eight months with no fringe benefits. After teaching in the Decatur County rural schools for 18 years, she taught in Kellerton and Osceola, Iowa for seven years. The last 20 years of her teaching career were at South Elementary in Leon teaching first grade. For 16 summers she taught special reading to students in kindergarten through sixth grade in Leon. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University and continued taking classes throughout her career. Gretchen was an active member in local and district teacher associations serving different positions and was a past member of Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Xi, OES Weldon Chapter, Magazine Club, and Sorosis Club. She was a life member of the ISPA and NEA/ISTA, and treasurer of the IRSPA for 25 years. She also was an active member of the Leon Bible Church where she served on many committees. After her retirement she volunteered with her husband, Dale, at the Decatur County Museum for 12 years. She was also a volunteer at the Leon Public Library. Gretchen lived her entire life in Decatur County, Iowa, living in Leon since 1941. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved ones. Gretchen enjoyed sewing quilts, and made a quilt for each of her great grandchildren. She enjoyed keeping active. Gretchen is survived by her daughter, Judy Larsen, and husband, Thad, of Westfield, Indiana; three grandchildren, Michele Bogdajewicz (Paul) of Westfield, Indiana, Eric Larsen (Carrie) of Dekalb, Illinois, and Renee White (Jake) of Bellevue, Nebraska; 10 great grandchildren, Abby, Carly, and Robby Bogdajewicz, Noah, Rebekah, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Samuel Larsen, and Spencer and Henry White; two sisters, Marguerite Reynolds of Ankeny, Iowa, and Barbara Anderson (Vic) of Sebring, Florida; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Gretchen was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, in 2013; her parents; brothers, Ralph, Roy, and Raymond Spencer; and sisters, Helen and Gladys.
