She grew up in Marshalltown and received her education in the public schools. She later attended the Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown. She married Clarence H. Anderson on September 15, 1931, in Allison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Marshalltown where Gretchen worked as a machinist at Fisher Controls, Inc. for thirty years. She retired in 1971. She was a member of the U.A.W. Local #893, Marshalltown. Gretchen loved cooking and crocheting afghans for her family; but she especially loved her grandchildren. Surviving are her two daughters, Betty Burgess of Lamoille and Bea (Don) Runner of Gilman; Iowa; her son, Clarence "Jim" Anderson of Marshalltown; seven grandchildren, Janet (Kenny) Hutcheson of Indianola, David (Jane) Runner of Gilman, Judy (Steve) Carter of Ames, Ron (Deb) Burgess of Cedar Rapids, Bob (Mina) Burgess of Bangor, Denny (Marcia) Burgess of Gilman, and Jodi (Tom) Hilleman of Rhodes; 17 great grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Clarence on September 7, 1977; her brother, Richard Mullin; her son-in-law, Al Burgess; three grandchildren, Richard, Danial, and Donald "Butch" Runner; one great grandchild, Thomas Runner; and one great-great-grandchild, Jessica Pickar. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice in her memory.
