Description	:	Griffey Vandike was born in Tazewell County Virginia, on Sept 12, 1842, and died at his home Northwest of Huntly, Oct 25, 1920, at age 78 years 1 mo. and 13 days. when two years of age his parents moved to MO. In 1861 he enlisted in the 23rd Missouri Regt. for three years. He was taken prisoner at Shiloh in April 1863 and taken to Jackson, Miss., and later transferred to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. In 1861 he enlisted in the 23rd Missouri Regt. for three years. He was taken prisoner at Shiloh in April 1863 and taken to Jackson, Miss., and later transferred to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. In 1866 he was married to Mary? (Nancy) Lovell and to them 10 children were born, 4 dying in infancy. He came to Neb. in 1875 and was located on a homestead three miles Northwest of Huntley where he lived at the time of his death. 50 years ago he was converted and joined the Baptist church and was always a consistent member. He took an active part in the building of the Bainbridge church and was always interested in its progress. Two years ago and again one year ago he had very serious attacks of dropsy but got better and was in his usual health all summer. A week ago before his death, he went to Wray, CO to try the Baths there. He took a severe cold which brought on a recurrence of his old trouble. It developed rapidly and his children were sent they brought him home Saturday morning and he died two days later. Funeral services were held in the Bainbridge church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev Willimas, of Holdrege, and were attended by a large assembly of sorrowing friends and neighbors who extended their sympathy to the bereaved family. Interment was in Bainbridge Cemetery beside his wife who proceeded him 33 years ago.
