Born in Gilby, N.D., April 14, 1892, she was the daughter of John and Guanilda Haugen. Crain graduated from Mayville. (N.D.) Teachers College in 1928 and UND in 1930. She was a former deputy superintendent of schools for Grand Forks County and had taught in country schools between Honeyford and Arvilla. Her last school was in Thompson, N.D. when she was 72. Gaunilda Haugen Crain Sept. 21, 1987 The above was an excerpt from a poem Guanilda Haugen Crain wrote at the demise of the Arvilla (N.D.) Homemaker's Club. She had been a charter member of the club that spanned 57 years. Her friend of more than 50 years, Olga Williams, Arvilla, said that Crain could write a poem about anything. "She was real bright, and outgoing," Williams said. "She lived life to the fullest." Guanilda Haugen Crain, 96, 2206 South 10th St., died Thursday, July 28, 1988, in The United Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, Grand Forks. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and for one hour before services in the church. The family requests that memorials be given to First Presbyterian Church; or the charity of choice. At the urging of her niece, Nancy Middleton, Crain compiled a book of her poems in 1986. They are expressive and rich with portrayals of pioneer life that are not sentimentally idealized, but pictures of a life that could be hard as well as rewarding. The book of poems, "Those Treasured Times in Rustic Rhymes," is filled with special-occasion poems Crain penned for her friends and family. Her sister, Mary Middleton, Manvel, N.D., has one in honor of her 88th birthday. So do her cousin, Dr. Clifford Haugen, on his 8th, and her niece, Marion Behling, on her 75th birthday. Fifty-years wedding anniversaries were inspirations for poems, as well as memories of her husband, Erle. She wrote proudly of her daughters and grandchildren, and fun poems of sports and literature. Crain also wrote bittersweet poems that revealed her loneliness for bygone friends, the pain of broken bones that afflicted her in her old age and the pain of waiting for visits. Her companion, Joyce Stevens, who had lived with her for two years, said that when she first found out Crain had been a teacher, she thought, "Oh, good, I sure can learn a lot from her." Stevens added that she certainly did, because Crain believed that the mind could be stretched by taking in new ideas. Stevens said that Crain was an avid reader... "She read the newspaper from first page to last, omitting nothing," and breakfast meant that it was time for the crossword puzzle. She would not go to bed at night until the crossword puzzle was finished. She married Eric Crain June 11, 1930, in Grand Forks. He died Aug. 9, 1968. Survivors include her daughters, Joanne (Mrs. George) Sweeney, Midland, Mich., and Gene Henning, Orlando, Fla., nine grandchildren; sister, Mary Middleton, Grand Forks.
