Description	:	KRONBORG — Guilford Andersen Nissen, 99, of Kronborg died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora, where he resided the past few months. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kronborg. The Rev. Brian Krause will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Nissen was born March 2, 1914, near Hampton to Hans J. and Mathilda K. (Andersen) Nissen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, on Oct. 4, 2000. Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter and son-in-law, Marlys and Alex Meyer of Snyder; and two sons and daughters-in-law, LaWayne and Pam Nissen of Marquette and Leo and Aletia Nissen of Lincoln. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Shaunna Meyer and Scott Leigh of Lincoln, Timothy Meyer of Littleton Colo., Yvonne Meyer of Lincoln, Daniel (Claudia) Meyer of Buford, Ga., Michael (Heidi) Meyer of Bethlehem Ga., Trent (Shelly) Meyer of Nickerson, Brett (Melisa) Meyer of Snyder, Kelly (Jason) Swantek of Genoa; Cory (Matt) McGrew of Le Mars Iowa, Jim Nissen of Lincoln and Koan (Cassi) Nissen of Lincoln; and 27 great-grandchildren. At an early age, Guilford moved with his parents to a farm near Marquette and attended the rural Bell School. His formal education ended with 8th grade graduation and one session at Nysted Folk School after which he began farming due to the untimely death of his older brother. He had an ear for music, playing the violin as a teenager, the saxophone in his twenties in a local dance band (The 7-Ups), and the piano for a lifetime of enjoyment. Guilford farmed with his father until 1942, at which time his parents moved to Kronborg when he married Leona Andersen on March 22, 1942, at St. John's Lutheran Church, where he had been baptized and confirmed. He was an active lifetime member. Guilford served in the U.S. Army as a draftsman in the 650th Engineers Topography Battalion at Camp White, Ore. He was honorably discharged in May of 1943 and returned to farming. In 1969, he retired and moved to his parents' former home in Kronborg. During his retirement years, Guilford and his wife were involved in a prison ministry, including opening their home to assist prisoners in their transition from prison life to civilian life. Guilford enjoyed raising flowers and furnishing bouquets for worship services and special occasions in the community. Over the years he also made many batches of hand-dipped candy to share with friends both near and far. In later years, until lack of eyesight prevented it, Guilford enjoyed engaging others in challenging games of Scrabble.
