From the Brookings Register, December 28, 1922: The oldest person in Brookings county, Mrs. Guro Johnson of this city, died at the home of her son, Samuel A. Johnson, 119 Sixth street, Friday morning at 11:40 o'clock at the age of 99 years and 16 days. Mrs. Johnson has been a resident of Brookings county for over forty years and has been generally recognized for several years as the oldest person living in this county. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church Saturday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. B. A. Benson, and the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Lutheran cemetery near this city. The deceased was born in Sogn, Norway, December 4, 1823. There she grew to young womanhood and was united in marriage to Arne Johnson. In 1856, with her husband and one child, she came to America, settling in Dane county, Wisconsin. In 1864 the family moved to Mower county, Minnesota and later, in 1881, they came to Brookings county. With the exception of three years, the deceased since that time made her home in this county. Previous to moving to this city 20 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson resided on a farm near White. Since the death of her husband in May, 1909, she has made her home with her son, Samuel A. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A. B. Asper of Adams, Minn.; four sons, Samuel and Carl of this city, John of White, and Peter of Lyle, Minn.; 21 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
