Description	:	Gustav A. "Gus" Beaver, the Patriarch of Helena's West Main Street, went to his eternal reward to be with his departed loved ones on April 1, 2004. Gus passed away with his family by his side at the VA Hospital at Fort Harrison. Gus was born to Lawrence Knutson and Amanda (Olsson) Beaver on Nov. 25, 1910, in Helena. Gus has resided at the family homestead at 595 West Main during the majority of his 93 years. The Beaver family has resided there since 1905. The Beaver family home was placed on the National Historic Registry by the Montana Historical Society in 2000. Gus was first married to Alice Bernice (Warren) Beaver. He then married Nell Bernice (Doughty) Beaver. Gus was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Bernice (Doughty) Beaver; brothers, Lawrence, Woodrow and Raymond; sisters, Lillian Shank and Dora Kuntz. He was the last remaining member of his generation. He is survived by his sons, Don (Jane) Beaver of Seeley Lake, Larry and John of Helena; his daughters, Nancy (Bud) Archer of Billings, Mary (Bing) Crosby of Tustin, Calif., Joyce Sturn, Shirley (Keith) Herrin, Phyllis (Dick) Lamping, Diana (Willard) Gustafson, Judy (Corky) Harris, Clarice (Scott) St. Clair, all of Helena. Gus is also survived by 29 grandchildren, and 54 great-grandchildren, with three more expected, and five great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Barbara Beaver, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gus will be remembered first and foremost for his keen wit, which stayed with him until his last hours. Gus spent much of his childhood working on a ranch in the York area until he returned to Helena as a young man, where he began a trucking business. Gus transported many of the historical artifacts that are preserved in Virginia City. Gus served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II. Gus was truly a jack of all trades, who in his 93 years was involved in all sorts of various projects, from soldering the Montana Capitol Dome during the 1940s, establishing the Nellie Grant Mine above Park Lake, to the repair of anything and everything mechanical. Many a wayward soul staggered up West Main Street only to be greeted by smiling Gus, and walked away with whatever problem they may have had solved, along with a head filled with stories from the man in black that helped them out. In his later years, Gus enjoyed spinning a yarn about days of yore from either the chair in his living room or the steps of his shop, to his large and adoring group of family members and friends. The patrons of the ole' B & B Market were often blessed with the presence of Gus on a daily basis, and although he was never able to trade in his false teeth for groceries, there is no doubt that he brought a bit of sunshine into every day. The tour train rolled by Gus' house many times a day during the summer months, and one of the truly historic sites on that trip for the lucky tourist was a glimpse of a true Helena pioneer. Services will be at Retz Funeral Home on Monday, April 5, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Tom Banks will officiate. Following the services the interment will be held at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison. A reception will follow at the Service Club. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Troy Beaver, Ron Sturn, Duane DeCouteau, Keith Herrin Jr., Randy Lamping, Kelly Harris, Sean Beaver and Stewart St. Clair.
