Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Eureka Reformed Church with Pastor James Grossmann leading the service. Interment, with military graveside rites, follows at the Eureka Cemetery. Visitation will commence 1:00 P.M. Thursday at the church. Gustav Kauk, son of Karolina (Ackerman) and Christian Kauk, was born December 2, 1920 at a farm two miles NW of Artas. He was raised on the farm and attended the Kauk Rural School and Artas High School. He attended Zeeland High School his junior and senior year graduating with the Class of 1940. He then stayed at home on the farm. Gust married Elsie Schaible at Eureka on May 23, 1944. Gust went on to serve his country in the United States Army, being inducted August 26, 1944. Gust served in the European Theatre battlefront until the end of the war. He received the Good Conduct Medal of Honor, European ribbon with three battle stars, and Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. Following his honorable discharge on July 3, 1946, he and Elsie took over a farm south of Artas. Gust attended barber college and did barbering for many years. They moved into Eureka in 1970 where Gust engaged in carpentry work as well as farming. He was employed by ASCS Service for many years. Elsie died June 10, 2001. Gust has lived at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center since April 2012. He was a member of the Eureka Reformed Church. Gust is survived by one daughter, Joyce Kranzler of Waynesboro, PA; one sister, Frieda Trautman, Eureka, one granddaughter, Bobbie Jo (John) Eichensehr of Finksburg, MD; two great-grandchildren Morgan Taylor and Ian Connor Eichensehr. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Susan in infancy, four brothers and three sisters. Casketbearers will be Richard Kauk, Donald Kauk, Larry Kauk, Timothy Kauk, Anthony Kauk, Don Lange, and Charles Neuharth. Honorary bearers will be his great-grandchildren, Morgan Taylor Eichensehr and Ian Connor Eichensehr and all of Gust's true friends over his lifetime. Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements.
