"Gus" Ritter, a resident of Bettendorf, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Davenport, following an extended illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. He was born Feb. 15, 1912, in Davenport, the son of Bruno and Annie (Beelmann) Ritter. He married Annie Slaby on March 23, 1932, in Morrison, Ill. Gus was a farmer, a bus driver and a custodian for the Pleasant Valley School System and a groundskeeper at the Davenport Country Club before his retirement several years ago. Many of the trees at Davenport Country Club, Blackhawk School and Belmont School, where planted by Gus over the years from saplings gathered from his own timber. He loved to dance and enjoyed playing pinochle with his many friends. He truly loved his work at the country club. He dearly loved his entire family and always had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Annie; his daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Don Ewoldt, Greenwood, Wis., and Beverly and Bob Hardy, Bettendorf; his son and daughter-in-law, James B. and Marilyn Ritter, Beardstown, Ill.; his grandchildren, Don Ewoldt and his wife, Kate; Becky Deery and her companion, Larry Nelson; Vaughn Ewoldt and his wife, Jill; Gary Ewoldt and his wife, Nancy; Brian Ewoldt and his wife, Kaye; Lynn Stabnow and her husband, Randy; Scott Ritter and his wife, Nancy; Fawn Rohn and her husband, Dan; Jennifer Vermillion and her husband, Scott; Brenda Hardy; Robert Hardy Jr.; and Richard and his wife, Ronna Ritter; his great-grandchildren, D.J. David and Betsy Ewoldt; Chris and Megan Derry; Jocelyn and Andy Ewoldt; Gus, Val, Hanna, Samantha and Kassey Ewoldt; Adam Jason Ben and Leah Ewoldt; Amber and Sarah Stabnow; Gabriel Mariah and Troyer Ritter; Dusty Peggy and Sadie Rohn; Drake and Gus Vermillion; Jacob and Railynn Hardy; Lucas Whitlock; Cleone Ritter and a new great-grandchild expected in November; his brothers and sister-in-law, Rudy Ritter, Bettendorf; and Harry and Jeanette Ritter, LeClaire; and many other relatives and treasured friends. Gus was preceded in death by his beloved son, Richard, in 1965; his brothers, John, Fritz and Edwin "Hans" Ritter; and his parents.
