Gus was born October 8, 1923, near Marysville, KS, son of Emiel and Marie (Van Heicke) Claeys. He attended rural McLeod Grade School, St. Gregory's Catholic School, Topeka Catholic High School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1941. On October 10, 1945, he married Bernice Ann Benda at St. John's Catholic Church, Hanover, KS. The lived their entire married lives north of Marysville where he enjoyed farming and raising his six children. Survivors include two daughters, Connie (Francis) Vering, Marysville, Dolores (Paul) Jueneman, Washington, KS; four sons, Richard (Judy) Claeys, David (Tammy) Claeys, Kenneth (Judy Jo) Claeys, all of Marysville, and Gary Claeys, Manhattan, KS; two brothers, Victor Claeys, St. George, KS, and Francis Claeys, Marysville; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; parents; sister, Margaret Wood; brothers, Maurice, Lawrence and August Claeys; and infant daughter, Susan M. Claeys, in 1962. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, October 6, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery.
