Gebhardt passed away Thursday, Oct.13, 2005, at Evergreen Nursing Home in Hot Springs, where he has been a well-cared-for resident since March of 2005. He was born on Feb. 16, 1919, in Balta, N.D., the son of Christian and Katherine (Byrne) Gebhardt. Gebhardt passed away Thursday, Oct.13, 2005, at Evergreen Nursing Home in Hot Springs, where he has been a well-cared-for resident since March of 2005. He was born on Feb. 16, 1919, in Balta, N.D., the son of Christian and Katherine (Byrne) Gebhardt. Guy's sterling characteristics of helpfulness, trustworthiness, loyalty, reliability, acceptance and economy were molded in a large, hardworking family who knew how to be self-sufficient and to survive the Great Depression. He exercised these fine qualities in the Plains community for over 50 years. If one needed a loan, a temporary home, help with repairs of every kind or a fishing/hunting partner, Guy was ever-ready to share his talents and goodwill. As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 10, 1941 at Fort Missoula and proudly served our country during the World War II campaign. Guy was honorably discharged on Jan. 18, 1946, at Fort Lewis, Wash. His loyalty to his beloved country was unmatched. For many years, his financial support and dedicated membership in the VFW were well-known and depended upon in the Plains community. A picture of Gen. Eisenhower greeting his men in World War II was one of Guy's prized possessions. When he would share this picture, you could sense the pride move within him. He revered his commander and the comradeship and unity that the picture evoked. Guy's patriotism never waned - it just grew stronger with each passing year. During retirement, Guy became a loyal, generous and dedicated supporter of the String Orchestra of the Rockies. He loved the music as well as each orchestra member, and was thrilled to play an integral part in the orchestra's ability to expand, grow and reach a broader audience through more guest artists and master classes. His smiles of joy radiated before, during and after all concerts. He truly loved his orchestra! Also, in later years, Guy focused on supporting orphaned children. His sponsorship of Indian, Central and South American and U.S. children would see their needs filled for the duration of that child's commitment. Guy did not spend lavishly on himself. His ability to bring fresh life from his storehouse of leftover/castoffs/and discarded parts not only filled a need, but also enabled him to put his resources to work helping others. Guy is survived by his four brothers, Jim of Richland, Leo (and wife Betty) and Martin, all of Plains, and LeRoy of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Helen Williams (and husband Glenn) of Helena and Ruth M. Beam of Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by his longtime friends, the Alex Morrison family. Services will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Plains. Military rites will be conducted by the Wild Horse Plains VFW Post No. 3596 following the service, outside the church. A luncheon will be held following the services down in the church fellowship area. Arrangements are under the direction of Bunch-Toews Funeral Chapel.
