The funeral was attended by a large number of friends and business associates who came to pay their last respects to a man who had held the high esteem of the entire community. Business houses were closed during the services. Guy Burket, son of Clinton S. and Orpha Della Burket, was born at Ireton, Iowa, on March 3, 1886, and passed away at Hawarden on Sept. 23, 1943, at the age of 57 years, 6 months and 20 days. He came to Hawarden with his parents when he was eight years of age. He attended the Hawarden schools and was graduated from the Hawarden high school in June, 1903. He was graduated from the School of Pharmacy of Northwestern University in Chicago in 1905. While attending the university, he was affiliated with Phi Delta Chi fraternity. He started to work in the Harlan Drug store in Hawarden as a paper boy when he was 13 years of age. Except for the time when he was away attending school and two years, from 1908 to 1910, he was connected with the drug store firm as a clerk and later as proprietor. From 1908 to 1910, he operated a drug store at Driscoll, N.D. He then returned to Hawarden and joined in business with L.L. Harlan and son, Leon Harlan. Following the death of L.L. Harlan in 1918, Leon Harlan and Mr. Burket took over the business. In 1941, Leon Harlan sold his interest to S.W. Harker, after which the firm was known as the Harker & Burket Drug Co. About a year and a half ago, when he realized his health was undermined, Mr. Burket sold his share of the business to Mrs. S.W. Harker. Mr. Burket was united in marriage with Cora Rummel on Oct. 22, 1913, who survives him. Mr. Burket was the last member of his family. His parents and two brothers, Dr. John Burket and L.K. Burket, preceded him in death. He is survived by one aunt, La Roqua Stafford of Rocky Comfort, Mo., and four nieces and nephews. When L.L. Harlan passed away, Mr. Burket carried on in the drug business in the manner of his predecessor, under whose guidance he had been for many years. His close attention to the details of his business, his courteous manner and his earnest desire to serve his customers, together with knowledge that his word was as good as his bond, brought him success and esteem that somes to but few people in a lifetime. His interest in the civic growth of Hawarden was deep rooted. He had served as a member of the park board continuously since 1930. For the last three years, he served as president of the First National Bank, and for 30 years was treasurer of the Board of Education. He was one of the organizers of the Red Cross chapter in Hawarden and was its first chairman. He also served on the library board and for a year was president of the Rotary club. When Mr. Burket realized that he was stricken with an ailment that sooner or later would sap away his life, he resigned himself to his fate. He submitted to two amputations of his left leg, the first one below the knee and the second, in March 1941, just below the hip. Love for all growing things -- flowers, shrubs and trees -- was an integral part of his life. So, after his retirement from business, he filled his hours in enjoyment of these things at his home. His final illness was of short duration. He was taken ill on Sunday, September 12, with a heart attack. On the following Saturday, he was taken to the Hawarden hospital, where he lingered until Sept. 23, when death claimed him. Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mrs. G. E. Norby and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Green of Sioux Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Whitfield, Mrs. Letha Wallace and Mr. and Mrs. William Lundberg of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. S. Gardner of Arlington, Neb., Mrs. L. K. Burket and Mrs. Glenn Woods of Akron, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Miller and Neil of Elk Point and Mr. and Mrs. George Belkey and Melvin of Alcester.
