Gilbert, of 909-1/2 West Third street, formerly city treasurer for six years, and a resident of Sioux City for thirty-five years, succumbed to heart failure... ...Mr. Gilbert was born at Clarenceville, Canada, in 1837, where his parents were missionaries of the Congregational church. He was raised mostly in Vermont. When a young man he migrated to Michigan and taught school there winters and worked on a farm in the summer. When the civil war broke out, he enlisted in an independent regiment of engineers and mechanics known as "Sappers and Miners," and continued in the service until the close of hostilities, when he received his honorable discharge in November 1864. He then returned to Michigan and was shortly afterward married. After spending a year in Vermont he brought his bride west and settled in Sioux City in 1868. In 1873 he opened a grocery store for himself. He continued in the grocery business till he was selected city treasurer in 1877, which office he held till 1883. While attending a service in the Congregational church some plaster fell and struck him on the head and so shocked him that he suffered from nervous prostration. He was unable thereafter to continue at indoor work, and served the city for several years as foreman of the sidewalk construction gangs. Besides his wife, Jennie McKercher Gilbert, who has been devoted to him for thirty-six years, he leaves one daughter, Miss Florence, who teaches in the public schools at Upton, Mass., and a son, Irving M., who is in business in Boston, Mass., and another daughter, Mrs. Russell Johnson, at whose home in this city he died. The burial was in Floyd cemetery.
