OBITUARY THE RUSSELL UNION-TRIBUNE Russell, Iowa Thursday, October 5, 1939 MRS. CHAS. COFFMAN DIED SAT. MORNING Gwendolyn Irene Long was born April 7, 1886, and died September 30, 1939 at her home north of Russell, Iowa at the age of 53 years, 5 months and 23 days. Gwendolyn, who was known to all her friends and relatives as Gwen, was the youngest child of Winfield and Gwennie Long. She died on the farm on which she was born. She resided in Pleasant township until she was twelve years old, then lived a few years near Columbia, Iowa. On November 25, 1908 she was united in marriage to Charles F. Coffman of Columbia. To this union was born three daughters, all of whom are living: Frances Gwendolyn Cottingham, of Russell, Alice Enola and Marietta Coffman, at home. She leaves one grandchild, Connie Lee Cottingham. Also surviving are four brothers and two sisters, Arthur Long of Blackfalls, Alberta, Canada; Win Long of California; Joe L. and Dave Long and Mrs. Rachel Foster of Des Moines and Mrs. Fan Brown of California. Her father, mother and brother, James, preceded her in death. On May 19th, she was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and never afterward was able to converse, thus it was very difficult for her to convey her wishes even to her immediate family. Her mind was always clear and her thoughts were of the welfare of her dear ones during her suffering. Up until last week there were strong hopes for her ultimate recovery. She suffered a sudden relapse on Thursday, Sept. 28, and then grew steadily weaker, the end came at dawn of September 30th with all of her immediate family present. At the beginning of her illnes she was immediately taken to Yocom Hospital where she remained for several weeks. Later, when she had partially recovered, she was taken to her home, where she remained until the time of her death. During all these months she was constanly attended by all the members of her family, but all that loving hands and medical aid could do was of no avail. Her passing will prove a great loss to the community as well as for her immediate family. She had always taken an active interest in all community affairs, and was never known to let her own health interfere when anyone was in need. A better neighbor never lived. In summing up her life, if we were to try and state in one brief sentence, it would be "She lived to bless mankind." Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals of the Russell Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Garold H. Noland of Columbia, were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Beardsley Funeral Home in Chariton. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Geo. Hunter, Mrs. Mae Gasser, Ralph VanDyke and Dave Evans, with Mrs. R. S. Lewis at the piano. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful and bore silent testimony to the high regard in which she was held as well as sympathy for those left in bereavement. Burial was in the Zion cemetery. Pall bearers were men whom Mrs. Coffman had helped to choose to officiate at the funeral of her mother a few years ago. They were Clell, Caryl and Ancil Whitlatch, Walter Maddy, David and John Lewis. God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old, He fashioned her smile from the sunshine He moulded her heart of pure gold.
