Gwendolyn JoAnn Loner, daughter of Elmer and Gyda (Borgard) Loner, was born on January 28, 1931, in Nunda, SD. At the age of 13, Gwen became deaf as a result of Spinal Meningitis. Read More	Gwen Joann Eggebraaten January 28, 1931 - July 8, 2014 Gwen Eggebraaten, 83 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Dougherty Hospice House with family at her side. Gwendolyn JoAnn Loner, daughter of Elmer and Gyda (Borgard) Loner, was born on January 28, 1931, in Nunda, SD. At the age of 13, Gwen became deaf as a result of Spinal Meningitis. She briefly attended the School for the Deaf, but returned home to be with her family and proceeded to finish high school without using an interpreter or assistive devices. Often people did not realize she was deaf as she was such an amazing lip reader. In 1984, at the age of 53, she went to Iowa City to have one of the very first Cochlear Ear Implants. She was quoted in the Argus Leader as saying, "I feel like I've wandered the desert of deafness for 40 years." Gwen was united in marriage with Duane Eggebraaten on February 25, 1951, in Nunda, SD. The couple moved to San Francisco, CA, and then to Colman, SD, before coming to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1955. Gwen worked at Atlas Life Insurance and Blue Cross Blue Shield while raising a family. In 1989, Gwen worked at Citibank until retiring in 2005. Duane passed away on June 30, 1999. Gwen spent much of her retirement with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Association of Late Deafened Adults, Life After Deafness, 40 & 8, and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, baking, and was known for her potato salad. Strong-willed and confident, Gwen took on any challenge that life presented her with a generous and kind spirit. Later in life she embraced computers and the internet as a new avenue of communication with friends and family. Extremely generous, Gwen was always there for her children and grandchildren. Grateful for having shared her life are her son Paul Eggebraaten, Sioux Falls, SD; daughters Kristen Koob and her husband Randy, Sioux Falls, SD, Michelle Jorgenson and her husband Chris, Sioux Falls, SD, Kiley Meszaros and her husband Dennis, Whidbey Island, WA; brother John Loner, Sioux Falls, SD; sister Cheryl (Dennis) Lafrentz, Sioux Falls, SD; 6 grandchildren, Laura Zebroski, Dan Koob, Brian Koob, Jason Jorgenson, Madeline Meszaros, Jack Meszaros; 4 great-grandchildren; nephews Richie and Robbie Lafrentz; and many other relatives and friends. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband Duane, parents Elmer and Gyda Loner, and sister Connie Wosje. Visitation will begin at 2 pm with the family present from 5 to 7 pm on Friday, July 11, 2014, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Hope Lutheran Church with burial at Prairie Queen Cemetery, Nunda, SD.
