Gwynie grew up working on the family farm along with his five brothers and sisters where he claimed that his status as the favorite child was awarded with chocolate candy. He attended Gilbert High School where he graduated in 1960. After high school, he joined the Army where he was trained as a combat engineer and later joined the National Guard, serving for six years. A man of many talents, Gwynie’s gifts of construction and restoration were celebrated at the completion of his mountain home and his historic Captain James Henry Lewie home in the heart of Gilbert. Gwynie studied through Pennsylvania State University to obtain his certification to become an apprentice pipe fitter. He then began his career with Grinnell Fire Protection where he worked for sixteen years. In 1980, Gwynie joined Lexington School District One as the Head Custodian at Gilbert Elementary School (GES) where he was fondly referred to as the school principal, “Mr. T,” by the GES staff and students. Known for his teddy bear hugs, morning greetings, encouragement, and assistance, Gwynie was routinely called on as the one who could fix anything; no matter the circumstance. After twenty-six years of service to GES when the implementation of technology replaced personal interaction with teachers, Gwynie retired to enjoy time with his family and traveling to his mountain home in Tryon, NC where he maintained the beauty of Melrose Mountain. He spent his retirement with handy-man building projects and repairs, riding his tractor, and as an honorary employee and the official greeter of Price’s Country Store in Gilbert, SC. Gwynie was an active member of Pond Branch United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Council, PPRC Committee, Men’s Club, Cemetery Committee, as a youth counselor, as a Sunday School teacher, and worked as the church custodian for thirty years. He served Gilbert as a member of the Town Council for numerous years and was involved with the South Carolina Peach Festival from its beginnings. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, his high school sweetheart and favorite red head, Nancy Paxton Taylor, his oldest son, Gary (Brantlee) Taylor, his baby girl, Julianne (Jon) Rogers, and his youngest son, Kyle Taylor. His greatest blessings and loves of his life were his grandchildren and great-grandchild to come: William Kyle Taylor (Dovyajnah) and Baby Everleigh Noelle due in June, Destinee Aleece Taylor, Tristan Tyler Taylor, Colie Brooks Taylor, Caroline Blair Taylor, Charleston Elizabeth Rogers, and Jon Fisher Paxton Rogers who affectionately made him PaPa Taylor. Gwynie’s days and evenings were filled supporting and cheering his grandchildren on baseball, basketball, football, and soccer fields, at dance recitals, and at gymnastics meets. He is also survived by his brother, Gerald Taylor, and sisters Linda (Jesse) McCormick and Nancy (Butch) Reynolds and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Colie Festus (Buck) Taylor, his mother, Faye Long Taylor, his sister, Judy Houck, and his brother, Danny Taylor. Gwynie’s legacy leaves behind a family blessed by his examples of love, determination, and tenacity, friends from the mountains to the coast, and a life well lived. The last lessons that he taught his family were to fight for what you believe in, love hard, and have no regrets in the end. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at 4:00 pm at Pond Branch United Methodist Church with military honors. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, William Taylor, Tristan Taylor, Brooks Taylor, and Jon Fisher Rogers, and his friends and family, Jacob Price, Tommy Amick, John Reeder, and Franklin Zeigler.
