Dr. Stapleton was her Doctor at birth, and Dr, Stapleton for his sevices charged five dollars. Rosalind's parents had two children prior to her birth. Lois was the oldest child and Allen their next child was a boy who was five years younger than Lois. Rosalind was their youngest and the baby of the family. Her family lived in Hickman, Nebraska for about five years following her birth. They then moved to Crete, Nebraska where her father was employed with an autombile agency selling Dodge automobiles. Crete was about 20 miles from Hickman. The family would laugh about the time Rosland asked if they had moved to a different country in later years, Rosalind was often teased about asking that question. When she was seven years old her parents took a trip to California. They decided after a visit in the lovely state that they would rent a home in Long Beach, Calfiornia and see how livng in Californa would be a happy change from Nebraska where the winters so many times were difficult with so much snow and low temperatures. When school started in California all three of the children were enrolled for attandance. At that time the California schools were offering instrumental music lessons free of charge. She was tested and her parents were told that Rosalind had excellent recognition of pitch so they recommended that she should take a string instrument. Since her sister played the violin as well as the piano they chose for her to play the violin as Lois could be of help when she practiced at home. After living in California a year her parents had word that her Mothers Mother was very ill. As she lived in Nebraska it was decided that the family would return to Nebraska as her Mother would be of help to her Grandmother if she needed care after her serious illness. The family again settled in Crete and her grandmother moved to Crete also although her summers were spent in her home in Hickman when Rosalind could be with her during the summer months. This was a great time for her because her grandmother would let her have her dog in the house and even let the dog sleep in the bed with Rosalind. She studied violin at the Unviersity of Nebraska prior to college and also was playing in the University Orchestra while in High School. She played the trombone in an ALL GIRLS BAND in Linclon during this time also. There was competition within the school to choose the student that would enter music contest. She competed on the viola the first year and was chosen. She won Local, State and National honors that year. The next year she competed on the violin and she won that honor and competed at State and National levels on the violin, due to all this she was offered a scholorship to the University of Nebraska so this was a great money saver for her parents. She graduated from college there with a Music Degree at the age of nineteen. Earlier received her Certificate of Graduation from The Unviersity of Nebraska Teachers College in May of 1937 she was just seventeen. Her first teaching job was in a consolidated school in Iowa - Gilbert, was the school and it was near Ames, Iowa so the teachers had great times going in for the Wednesday night dances at the College there. They met nice fellows and later dated some of them - after three years there she was offered a job at Roosevelt High School in Des Monies, Iowa. This was a great job and she taught there two years when she decided to join the American Red Cross and go overseas to entertain the troops. This was WWII so there was great demand for Red Cross girls at the entertainment clubs where the soldiers would spend free time and she was sent to Alexandra Egypt. Rosalind had a lovely place to live and the beach for soldiers enjoyment was her day job and the evenings were for organizing the girls interviewed that would dance with the solders. Rosalind organized a live band and European girls recruited were great dancing partners for the US soldiers. After Alexandria Egypt assignment she was sent to Casablanca where they entertained troops as many were returning to the States from their oversears assignments. Fortunately, another Red Cross girl was from Nebraska so it was great to get acquainted with someone from her state back home. They became great friends and returned to Nebraska at the same time. Rosalind decided to go to graduate school. While in graduate school her sister called and said there was a need for a Youth Activities Director at her church. The salary was more than attractive so she took it after they interviewed her and offered Rosalind the job. This was in Portland, Oregon at the 2nd largest Presbyterian Church on the West Coast. This work was very interesting however some of the Church members and groups looked at Rosalind as a religious, knowledgeable person and she needed more background. Dr. Wright the head ministery of the church sent her to San Ansimo for more background which proved to be most helpful. She started many groups. The young Adult group she started had 20 engagements the first year. She thought that quite remarkable. An overseas recruiter for X-Red Cross girls to do Special Services overseas was in Portland when she decided to be interviewed so she did this and was offered a Program Diector in Munich Germany. She took the offer and after two weeks of training in Washington D.C. She was off to Munich and her Program Director Job. This was a great job! During that time she met her childrens Dad, A. W. Brown. They dated and decided to marry. They wanted to go to the U.S. for this and so Rosalind left Europe and A.W. came back to the States three months later and they married. His new assignment was in Oregon as he was a Miliatry Officer. Afer six months in Oregon he was able to get re-assigned to Europe. This was their dream come true as they both loved living overseas. The help was cheap and Rosalind always enjoyed teaching in the Amercian Schools. The couple had five children Jeanne Lois, David Warrick, Pamela Raye, Douglas Allen, and Dierch Lefferdink. They traveled the world with the Military assignments. A.W. Retired from the Military from his last assignment located in Boulder, Colorado, this was one of the happiest locations in the US that the coupled loved. They spent over thriteen years living in Boulder raising the children. Rosalinds brother Allen also lived there for a period of time with his family of five children and Lois her older sister lived in the near by state of Utah so visits were often to Boulder. Rosalind often commented to her children that she enjoyed Boulder as some of her most happiest years. Later, Rosalind established the string program in the Polk County School System in Lakeland Florida. She was a conductor of orchestras, teacher of music, receiving many awards, state championships with her students, they loved her dearly as a teacher, she was every students dream and she was loved. She eventually retired from the school system and moved to California for retirement. Rosalind in her retirement became very active in Lawn Bowling and known as Roz in the bowling world. She began bowling in the early 1980s. Prior to bowls Roz was active in golf throughout her lifetime and could have been a pro-golfer. She was that good. Roz held many offices in the bowls world including being a selector of Team USA. She was a member of the team that went to Hong Kong and represented the Team USA in the Pacific Bowls Championship. Nationally, Roz has won many big titles; Open Singles Champion, National Pairs Champion, Disney Champion, etc. She was the first woman President of the Laguna Beach Lawn bowling club and a longtime member of the Laguna Beach and Riverside Lawn Bowling clubs. She was a featured story and on the cover page of the Orange County Register Newspaper Sport page with a full-page cover of her talent in bowling at the age of 70. She will be remembered for her many contributions to the sport, her always cheerful attitude, and her love of the wide drawing bowls. Rosalind moved to Braemar, a co-op community of condominium type units located in a small-gated community in Riverside, California. She was in her mid 70s at this time and she remained living at this location until her death at 97. She traveled from her home in Braemar with her children on many wonderful vacations to Europe and within the US. She was one of the mover and shakers in the community at Braemar heading up the social committee upon her arrival. She revitalized the clubhouse, with new furniture and started so many activities for the local residents to participate and enjoy such as; swim aerobics and she actually instructed the water exercise class into her late 80s, she additionally facilitated setting up Art Class, writing, Tai-Chi, Pot Luck, BBQ, musical plays, and that list goes on. All that knew her in life respected her, and all LIKED her. She was a good person and will be remember for her wonderful positive attitude, dedication, zest for life, dressing to perfection: a classy woman. She enjoyed having fun, never lost that desire to go.even into her late 90s she loved going places and doing things, and probably remembered most for her kindness to everyone.
